Good Questions: Copper Table Tops?

2005_1_3_question mark.jpgHello AT,

After years of eating on Moustache's amazing copper tables, I have decided to live the dream. (Why not? I've got the tin ceiling, the clawfoot tub and ceiling fans.) Room and Board's copper make-your-own table tops are too big, sadly, as they are reasonably priced ($360 for a 36" round or square).

Does anyone know where I could get a 30"x48" copper table top, or get one made, for a comparable price?

Thanks, Amy (small Micro Palace update below the fold)

We would research in these places:

Alas, the Micro Palace continues at at micro pace. Theoretically, the cabinets are supposed to be in by this evening (I'll believe it when I see it). Other than that, nothing has happened since last week. The pets are protesting -- the dog built a bed out of the contractor's plastic sheeting this weekend...

My great friend jennifer has a copper fetish, after having had one of the grooviest items ever on her wall... someone who lived in er place was doing work at the Dakota sometime ago and managed to procure one of those Gorgeous antique electrical panels... black board (unknown material) and Gorgeous copper switches... Talk about machine age drama. So she went with it and covered a door with copper sheeting and did a copper installation on the wall after that roommate left with the switchboard in tow. I think she scored the sheeting at Home Depot or something and got a handyman to cover the door. Looks Great!

You could probably tack sheeting over any tabletop. I'd carefully look at what the Moustache tables look like... even take your handyman for the Moustache Pitza (delish) and have him take a close look. You might look for decorative brass tacks to make your table extra fancy.

Good Luck... If you have this done you should submit pics!

AMy, I was just at Hampton Chutney and they have nice copper table tops. Because of you, I started to look at them closely and SKGR yelled at me for pulling the copper off the table and turning it over (it actually came off!). I think you could do it or get it done pretty easily and suggest checking their tables out. They might even know who did it for them and could do it for you....

Hi -I am purchasing a copper table. My question relates to the care of the copper top. It is currently in a natural state -- the shop recommends polyurethane to bring up the color (applied by them). I've heard that car wax is also a recommended treatment. If so, is there a particular wax that is recommended?

What's the preferred treatment to bring up the color and provide the best protection?

Thanks.

I found this thread looking for more advice, but it looks like I've already learned more than y'all, at least on the DIY front.

The "copper development association" has good ground rules and advice, Caring for copper, and a promise that instructions are coming soon.

As well some lady on geocities has a great step-by-step of how she made her counters. Rubber mallet and brass screws are the key tools that I wouldn't have thought of.

The catch is getting your hands on copper sheeting. I haven't worked that one out. They sure don't have it at home despot and Lowes only has 10" flashing. A friend clued me into a supplier in Brooklyn. I'll see how it goes.
