Good Questions: Corner Stand for Flat Panel TV?

10-25-logan.jpgHello AT,

Where can I find a good-looking, functional, won't-break-the-bank corner stand and shelves for a flat-panel TV? The space is 80" long on one wall and 60" on the other (shorter because the wall gives way to a stair rail), and we're finding it really difficult to fill it...

Our requirements:

1. Dark wood or black, traditional/craftsman/mission style (no metal legs)
2. Something to hold up to a 50" flat panel TV plus at least two component boxes (can't get rid of the cable box for the time being)
3. Not crazy-expensive (which rules out custom, I think)

We really like the base units of the Pottery Barn Logan system (picture included; envision it without the hutches) but it comes to aboout $2000, which is at the absolute high end of our budget, plus I'm not sure they would fit along the short wall. Any other suggestions? You'd think with all the small apartments more companies would offer corner solutions!

Thanks, Ann

Ok, gotta ask, why put a flat panel TV in a corner? You instantly create dead space behind the TV, giving up one of the best reason to buy flat in the first place.

Not to mention that placing a TV in the corner is often the worst thing you can do for the audio. I'd try and find a way to put that TV on a wall where it can disappear and use that valuable square-footage in the corner for real storage.

Corner's the only place it will work with the other seating in the room. Imagine that corner is between walls #1 and 2. Rest of wall #1 is stairs. Rest of wall #2 is open to another room. Wall #3 is all windows. Wall #4 is windows & entry door.

We thought about mounting it on the wall with a swing-arm, but still doesn't solve the component-storage issue.... And best viewing will come if it's at an angle in the corner.

(And no, it's not an option to move it to another room... we like watching movies in that room.)

Thanks!

I have something very similar to what is found in the picture. The dead place behind the TV is used for keeping our storage. We have a shelf behind this where we keep our tools, vaccum cleaner, baskets other such similar things which does not require everyday use.

we bought ours from a garage sale. It is very flimsy but the purpose of using vertical, horizontal and corner space without wasting any space is utilized well

the following, per your request will actually give you more space in the corner.
this is due to the fact that you can swing the whole corner unit out to access cords/cables and also have room behind the unit to hide/store various possessions with easy access.
if, the following company cant help you, then i will send you cad files if needed.
contact hiddendoors and direct them to this request on apartment therapy.

Ohhh - I love the idea of a hidden door. Do these work well for everyday use? In my apartment, the door to my bedroom is in the middle of the living room (no hall) and it really bothers me. I was wondering if this might be a good solution.

Ann,

We had the exact same problem and had hard time finding one...until we looked at crate and barrel's kingston corner media stand for $349. you can find it, here:

http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1152&f=12146

We have a 46 inch flat screen in our bedroom and this stand is perfect! it has a two shelves, so tehre is more than enough space for our DVD player and satellite receiver. Note, though, that they will charge you an extra $125 to ship - it's heavy!

hope this helps,
g.
