Hello, I am in the midst of renovating my small 6 x 8 NY bathroom and have a quick question.. Is there a standard width a bathroom light fixture should be relative to the mirror/vanity width? If so what would that be? The light fixture I bought is 30 1/2 " wide, which is wider than the mirror and vanity which are both 24"...should I be using a narrower light fixture? Please help! Thanks! Christina

If you're asking the question, it looks weird to you. (as it would to me)
If there are design rules, I think the #1 rule is, if it looks weird to you, you probably wouldn't wanna look at it every day, and therefore, you should probably not drill those holes in your wall just yet.

I think the fixture you mentioned is too big, it's going to overwhelm your space and look top heavy. I would suggest going with something the same width as the mirror or smaller.

It sounds too big.
If you have the wall space, you could put a sconce on either side of the mirror instead.

Yes.

I'd check the web site of the National Kitchen and Bath Association, http://www.nkba.org, since they create and promulgate the types of standards you are seeking.

I agree that a more narrow light fixture would look better. Maybe two lights flanking the mirror if you have room.
On a side note, I love that vanity. Could you please give me the manufacturer and model name/number?

My friend had the same problem - he could go narrower or wider. He went wider. It looks great. But it was VERY minimalist.
