Dear AT,
I hate my bathroom floor. The room itself is small and oddly shaped, but passable. The floor however is covered in those yucky, speckley-flecked tiles that I think were in the lavatories (!) of my grade school
What can I do? Something in a cut to fit tile (cork, marmoleum) seems like a good idea, but what about installation? I'd like to do it myself, but I have a toddler so consequently not lots of time. What do you think?
xoxo Jennifer
What your describing doesn't sound great, but you don't want to lay something on top of it that looks even worse. We haven't done a lot of this, but for cheap and easy, our recommendation would be to use either:
- Bolon vinyl sisal flooring - buy the length and cut to size
- Flor Tiles - to fill center area OR whole floor by cutting around objects
There is no replacement for having the floor redone (if you own, redo it! Small floors aren't expensive), and water is your enemy, but both of these will cover up, look good and not retain moisture too much. (Thanks, Jennifer!) MGR

Ewwh carpet in a bathroom.
Water and such, mold mildew. Cleaning it. Yuck.
Pergo or similar laminate floors might work. There are also new click-in-place actual ceramic tiles now, at either Lowe's or Home Depot.
And could teak decking tiles be an option?
I have ugly vinyl tiles in my tiny bathroom. I've often thought about buying a large bathmat and cutting it to fit as a quick fix. If you're just worried about the way the tiles look, you can paint them, although they won't wear well in the long term.
I have seen my uncle tile right over old tile.
Worked well. As long as everything is level.
I had the same situation in two small baths in my rental apt. I bought white epoxy paint and painted the existing tile-grout and all. It works very well, actually. 10 years later there is some chipping in high-traffic spots, but still white and looks like tile (well, almost). It does take some fairly serious prep work. you have to clean the tile with muratic acid before painting, etc (ask at the paint store or home depot or somewhere). Even so, it only took a long weekend to prep and paint (two coats and the first requires a day or twon to dry before the second coat. I think it is much better than any follor-covering!
Hey there .Im searching high and low for ugly bathrooms for our upcoming show. If anyone here has a truly ugly bathroom lurking in their home or knows someone who does, please let me know. Id love more leads!
It can be anywhere in the country, but it has to be P-U décor, rather than just in shoddy shape or dirty!
Thanks
