Dear Josh,

What problem? ;-)

But seriously, aside from retiling, you simply need to paint the currently black wood trim back to a shade of white to take the edge off. Light curtains would also help.

While we're not crazy about the creamy wall color, we would go with a warm off-white on the walls with a shade brighter on the trim.

Anyone else?

WHY do the pink bathrooms always go to the people who don't want them? *sob*

Second the motion for lots of crisp white. Replace the lacy curtain with a tailored curtain or blind.

You need one more color, and it needs to be one that plays up a sort of chic masculinity. I'm thinking something like a gray-blue... but basically, look at current housewares for a "guy color" (blue, navy, brown, tan, gray, forest) that is included in stripes with your pink and black. Get a couple accessories with the stripes (curtain would be a win here) and a whole lot of accessories that are solid in the new accent color.

Alternatively, you could just go pink-white-black-silver, with a lot of black and silver, along with very sleek, tailored surfaces.

my friend just moved into an apartment in stuy town with an identical bathroom. he just went with it. he took the labels off of 3 bottles of pepto and lined them up with some pink cups and toys he found in a thrift store. added a turquoise trashcan and cup... it's fabo

Wallpaper! In a colorway that addresses the pink but introduces something else, too. Like silver.

Or a total tropical bark-cloth inspired kitsch design.

Lots of chrome and silver. Any more white and you end up with a nursery. Definitely a tailored shade or blinds. Nothing soft. And take heart that but for the color, it looks like it's a HUGE bathroom.

i agree that the people who would love a bathroom like this never seem to run across one. i would go with a dramatic black paint for the walls and ceiling. you will need to compensate with great lighting over the sink, but the black could help neutralize the Pepto-pink. maybe an accent color of verde gris or deep leaf green to balance the rosy pink. or just throw care to the wind and add zebra stripes for a swanky vibe. i think there is SO much potential for fun in this room. just embrace the wild color and live it up.

And the real answer is to sell it to Kat or Wende, because this bathroom needs to be loved -- it's sooooo cool. I say this partly because I have one dangerously close to this one, except that mine is peach-and-black, instead of pink-and-black.

But seriously, I see almost NO wood trim in here; most of that trim is tile, so you gotta leave it, unless you're gonna have the whole place either re-tiled or, as some people in my building do, have the TILES "re-glazed" by the same folks that do that to the tubs we have (in our building THOSE are also peach!). Not quite as expensive as re-tiling, but not quite as durable of a finish if you're not careful.

The way I dealt with my peach one is kind of like Patrick suggests, except that I painted it to LOOK like a specific wallpaper pattern that I found in an old sample book that I bought off eBay, which meant that I was able to match up the paint exactly like I wanted to. In my case, I made the "background" color the same off-white as the floor tiles had, and besides the black and grey and silver in the "wallpaper" I used a red-orange (that seemed to be darker and brighter than the tiles) within the pattern. Depending on what kind of pink you have, you might do a red or a burgundy and another shade in-between in that pattern. Going brighter, yet, than the tiles, made them stand out just a tiny bit less.

If you click on my name, you'll see how mine turned out, in case it gives you any ideas.

By the way, I'm sure I'd lose the curtain, and get the old-fashioned-width blinds.

Wow. WOW. That's some crazy pink and black alright. While personally, that would keep me awake at night, the HUGE bathroom is envious and as such I say play it up. First off, better lighting. Get rid of all 'ambient' light fixtures and go with spots. The less light you have bouncing around, the less the pink will be apparent. I agree with Maxwell, repaint the black trim and separate it (along with anything else you can) from the tile. Make the pink and black it's own beast. As for the walls, what about darkening them? The pink tile might not look so crazy if it's presented as an intentional piece of art that's in this dark, sexy (and properly lit) bathroom.

I would kill for this bathroom, too. To me, the problem isn't the tile or the pink/black/chrome color scheme, it's keeping the space from looking maniacally busy. I'd do the window entirely in black: the frame and the covering (I'm fine with a tier curtain, but black blinds would look great, I think). I'd replace the mirror with one with a chrome frame, maybe a medicine cabinet with storage to hide some of the stuff on the glass shelves. I'd paint the walls either the same color as the white floor tiles. I'd ditch the toilet rug. I'd paint the radiator screen black.

I have a similar bathroom only my floor is pink and black octagonal tiles that creates a flower like pattern. So I feel your pain.

But, resistance is futile. Go with the flow. Behr has a wonderful white paint with the very faintest hint of pink. Add some cool B&W artwork to the walls. I used art deco miami architecture. I swaped out the black toilet seat cover with a white one with chrome hinges. Oh and ditto nate on the turquoise -- i bought vintage model cars in turquoise to put in soap holders.

posted by Jean on 2006-06-07 13:11:42

I say up the black as much as possible and maybe add in some greys. A charcoal wall color or silver? Something cool to counteract the warm pepto pink (which I too love, by the way, but can see how one may not). I think the creamy paint tone does nothing for your cause. Maybe go with some black and white graphic accessories if that appeals to you? New sexy window treatments would also do wonders. (My opinion is ebonized wide slat wood blinds or a more "industrial" looking silver or solar shade.

I had this bathroom when I lived in philadelphia and I loved it. Now I've got a similarly retro, but white and black bathroom, and when I renovated my apartment, I refused to redo the tiling. Everyone thought I was weird for not "modernizing" the bathroom (don't get me wrong, I redid the internal plumbing and replaced a horrid sink), but these types of bathrooms just have so much character compared to the modern "simplicity" we get stuck with today.

Go with it!!

Pink can look really great against a dark chocolate brown. I would recommend that you paint the walls and wood trim a dark chocolate brown. This would look calming and masculine. Also, since this would be a darker color, you might need to readdress the lighting as stated by Tony.

Also to minimize the visual clutter, you should think about a closed medicine cabinet for all the toiletries that are on the glass shelf. Also for the window, use a plain white roller blind, and no rug for the toilet.

posted by kindbud1 on 2006-06-07 13:25:29

I LOVE this bathroom.
I second the idea that you replace the frilly cafe curtain with something cleaner and more modern (and covers the whole window).
Ditto for the mirror; the frou-frou gilt frame really detracts.
I would also paint the walls a light, cool color; the yellowish creamy whatever-it-is here really clashes. Maybe a pale gray (but even a white-white would look better than what's there now)?
I think painting the window frames and heater cover white would look great.
PLEASE don't retile! What you have is awesome!

Ahhh! I've never been sooooo jealous. I dream of a bathroom like this. It's a beaut. Well, except for the doilie-that-thinks-it's-a-curtain.

For me, a kitschy lovin' girl, I would hang a lot of black and white vintage fashion prints and make the place seem like a little 50's boutique.

But, you're a dude, you don't want that. But a 50's banana leaf style wallpaper might be an awesome homage to the beverly hills hotel and the polo lounge/ coffee shop.

Whatever you do, emobrace it, make it intentional.

I also like the idea of painting black - that's bad ass. Or, charcoal grey if you're not that bold. Then add a couple of pieces of very guy-esque art (framed 70's porn pin ups), or something modern and graphic. Since the pink comes off as girl kitsch, throw in some guy kitsch to balance. Fierce, yo.

Personally speaking, I hate the idea of beige or tan or any other Eddie Bauer nature guy color b/c it looks like you're trying to make do with a bathroom you hate - which always falls short. It's almost better just to leave it alone.

Find a way to love that pink, have it make sense to you and then use it.

And show us when you're done. I'm dying to see what you'd do.

posted by shauna on 2006-06-07 13:28:14

I agree with P2, wallpaper would tone down the pick/black -- seems odd, adding more color, but more color is needed to bring balance. Just the right wallpaper can make this bathroom exceptional!

I have a small version of this bathroom, with the bathtub surround in blue tile with pink tile trim. Unfortunately, in the 50 year life of the house, the rest of the fixtures (medicine cabinet, sink, floor) have been removed for 70s and 80s blandness. So I have a scary mix of both.

So, I'm thirding all the "love" posts.

Maybe you could do a subtle wide stripe pattern with the Behr paint mentioned by Shelby using a flat/semigloss. For cheap art, get an old Life magazine from the era of the bathroom and find some really fun bathroom ads in B&W, then frame them. We did that in our kitchen and bathroom and we get tons of compliments. The aqua accessories and lots of shiny chrome would be great as well.
BTW, that sink is exactly what I'm looking for.

My sister has the same 1930's bathroom in her suburban house. Her taste is more on the traditional side, so she went with white wood trim, a creamy color on the walls, and black-and-white toile roller blinds on the windows.

Don't fight the color scheme; just add more B&W.

This bathroom is nearly the size of my apartment.... What a luxury...

OK, so a bit late to the comments here, but...

I also go along with introducing dark gray into the mix. Paint the upper walls and the ceiling a dark gray, and also as mentioned before, add black and white photography for interest.
I also agree that adding focused spot lighting would take away from the overwhelming pinkness. Changing out the lighting can do a lot for this space, and help minimize what you don't want to see.

I'm with Tony 100%

Taking a page from my favorite designer, Roger Banks-Pye, making a dark room light by painting the walls white or a light color doesn't really work. Just go dark and make it dramatic.

Black walls and perhaps a black ceiling. A black-and-white striped fabric tailored window shade. A big round mirror over the sink. A chandelier. Go nuts.

posted by valerie on 2006-06-07 13:53:27

Oh, I wish this was my bathroom.

Instead of wallpaper, I would lay down a nice white paint all around, window trim and everything, so that the dominant color in the room is white. Put in a simple shade for the window. Put up a simple white shower curtain to sort of take away visually from all the pink tile in the shower. (Maybe all the fabric curtains could be terrycloth?) Change out the mirror for something clean looking with a white frame. Take down the shelves in favor of a small white piece of furniture to store your stuff and all those nice fluffy white terry towels.

And then, I would go out and find all the funny vintage nudie artwork available and make a small gallery space to nudies. No less than 20 images in simple frames.

My first 2 impulses echo kindbud1's and shauna's. 1st thought: Deep, rich chocolate walls with brushed nickel accents and accessories (incl. 2 pendant lamps above sink and sconce in commode area; and perhaps recessed fixture for tub area). 2nd thought: Or the banana-leaf wallpaper from the Beverly Hills Hotel coffee shop for a cheeky retro vibe--though that look might play better if you lived in Miami, Puerto Rico or Los Angeles... or if you're Esquivel.

Fascinating - both the "problem" and the responses. I love the bathroom too...but I would try to rework it to suit my more modern/contemp tastes.

If you're looking to modernize, I think think the iPOD minimalist aesthetic (white and pale grey) would work well in this bathroom. specifically, the frame of the mirror, bathroom shelves, minmalist white window treatments.

1. Wallpaper. I love Curtis' bath but more pattern wouldn't quite fit that more modern style.

2. Paint. I like the suggestion to repaint walls and trim. Maybe even repaint the radiator cover white to match the trim. A white toilet seat cover, too?

3. Lighting. Agree that spotlights might help lessen the pinky-ness rather than ambient lighting. Changing the lighting could provide the biggest impact next to repainting IMHO.

4. Towels/accessories. Personally, I wouldn't introduce another color to this room. Maybe pale silver. But otherwise, I'd stick with black or white - whatever matches your towel bars (which appear to be black). polished or satin nickel/chrome or clear for containers, etc.

Have fun!

Desk has a great point about art.

A male friend of mine salvaged a very shell pink bathroom with tiny-rose-flowered wallpaper by introducing just one framed poster that had that color in it, but was otherwise very masculine and strong in both subject matter and execution (a very geometric woodblock). We framed it in a hammered metal that bridged the room's silver fixtures with the texture of the block print, and by the time that one piece was up, you never saw the wallpaper, or acknowledged that the room was "pink": it became another color entirely.

But this bathroom here has such a graphic look because of the black tile, I think you really have to run with it, like Curtis did, like Tony suggests.

And yes, ALWAYS room for zebra stripes!!! :)
Get Alpha Workshops to custom color one of their new zebra patterened floorcloths!!!

A black on white toile wallpaper could actually work here, too.

That bathroom is bigger than my sleeping nook. Sigh.

Embrace the pink. Frame a fun vintage ad and hang it up there. You could have a lot of fun with this room. Whimsical works wonders.

I LOVE THIS BATHROOM!!!

BUT, if you can't stand it and don't want to spend much money, I suggest this.

WALLS Benjamin Moore has a new primer that will allow you to paint tile (and formica). After you prime, I suggest a solid coat of one color, including the grout. After it dries, apply (sponge) glaze to the tiles only.

FLOOR My absolute favorite bathroom floor is 60 ounce carpet, no pad. It should be 100% nylon, and double sided taped to the floor. It is the plushest, warmest bathroom floor you will ever have. (You might want to make the wc carpet a separate piece in case of accidents.) But if you want to and have a place to do so, the whole carpet can be pulled up and taken outside for washing and drying.

P(too), I was soo going to say b&w toile...but thought that might be over the top. I was also thinking that b&w baroquey print that is so hot right now. Can't think of the name.

Josh, just be glad you don't have my parents bathroom--pink and blue! Pink tub, pink toilet, used to have a blue vanity and blue tile edged with pink and a pink and blue mosaic floor. From the 40s/50s. At least with Pink and Black you can make it look somewhat sophisticated.

I guess the pink bothers you because you're male? You should feel blessed for having this well-installed tile, which I think is beautiful. No one installs tiles in mud anymore, and with such small grout lines. You have a treasure there and don't realize it! If this were mine, I'd match the white of your fixtures to a semi-gloss white paint, and paint the walls, ceiling and window trim. And then I'd buy the best fabric shower curtain (actually two, since your rod goes around two sides of the tub) that I could afford...in a crisp white with cording or ribbon trim in black or in black and pink. Or with a color band across the bottom. Ballard Design has white ones with Frette-style cording, and you can even have one monogrammed if that's your thing. Restoration Hardware has some along this line, too, or you can have them custom made. Paint the rad cover white or shiny black, and change out the toilet seat for a white one. Change the mirror for a more 1930's one -- perhaps a painted, wood-framed one like those carried by Pottery Barn or RH. Or a surface-mounted, painted-wood medicine chest. I can't see the glass shelves very well, but they look a little modern for this place. Painted wood shelves or a cabinet with doors would be more age-appropriate. In general, go with a 1930's feel. No kitsch...please! This place is too nice for that. If you emphasize the crisp black and white, it will downplay the pink.

In the 1930's, the window would have been covered by fabric curtains. Probably netting or lace. I'd go with painted wood blinds (actually fake wood blinds like Durawood, which won't warp in the moisture) with black ladder tapes. The horizontal lines would counter the active pattern of the floor, and the feeling would be more masculine. This room could easily have a vitage hotel look. Just stay away from anything twee.

And please get rid of the little rug around the bottom of the toilet! Those things scare me. I always wonder what's lurking in the fibers. If the rug is covering bad tile from an old toilet-seal leak, you could re-tile just the alcove in all-white tile with a border of black.

And finally, get a lot of thick, white towels and a spa-quality bathrobe.

My bathroom has similar tiling but it's peach and black (obviously a trend back in the day). But the floor is tile with mixed size tiles in shades of peach, taupe and beige, so the wallpaper is a floral that picks up all those colors. The black pretty much got ignored. I really thing a bold strong wallpaper is the answer, maybe a pure black and white so the pink becomes more of an accent color.

Oh and Patrick? We've got another zebra floorcloth in the office but this one is hot pink and orange. It looks like someone killed and skinned a cartoon character. A pink and black one would be great in this bathroom. Or perhaps the traditional black and white.

I just wanted to reassure Apartment Therapy readers that sometimes these types of bathrooms DO go to those who will appreciate them ... like me! The bathroom in our new house is tiled in a very similar way to this, except our tiles are more of a golden yellow than pink, and accented with black at the top like the bathroom pictured.

I am so thankful that the various homeowners along the way didn't rip them out. Clearly they don't appeal to everyone (I actually wonder if they may have put some potential homebuyers besides ourselves off), but the yellow trimmed in graphic black is so cheerful and full of personality. I love this pink bathroom too and was so glad to hear that most people are encouraging the owner to keep it!

We are planning to stick to a pretty basic palette with our bathroom and let the tiles be the star. The floor in our bathroom is white tile, with white wood trim. We're going to take down the pale wallpaper and just paint the upper walls white, add some chrome accessories like towel bars, and use a black and white shower curtain. A few black-and-white prints on the walls, and that's it.

I have the exact same color scheme in my bathroom and I painted two walls black, added an oversize mirror to reflect light and then painted the other two walls a light grey. It toned down the whole "pinkness" of the room.

The Dorothy Draper look would be amazing in here - the super large leaf print ala Greenbriar or Beverly Hills Hotel, as someone else already mentioned. There's even a book Called In the Pink: Dorothy Draper Americas Most Fabulous Decorator. I'm sure you'll find lots of great ideas in there.

That rad cover is off center and it would drive me crazy. Perhaps you could have another one made that would be much longer, balancing the window in the center. By doing that you could have storage in part of it.

Definitely get new curtains - black/white stripe would be cool. And I'd spring for a much larger mirror over the sink. Your bathroom is large enough to have some sort of storage for the clutter on the shelves. Or just get a great med. cabinet to put it all away.

Get new window treatments, paint the walls white (I would paint them black) and just lighten things up by putting everything out of sight and letting the pink tile take pride of place. So nice... And a window to boot! You don't know how lucky you are. My bathroom in Brooklyn is a reclaimed closet that I call the heart of darkness.....

I am going to risk the wrath of the ATers here. If you can't stand the pink, you can always have your tiles glazed. We had a salmon pink bathroom (think Saved By the Bell days), floor to ceiling, without any historical details and it was butt ugly. Replacing the tiles was too expensive. We got a company (Miracle Method I think?) to come and glaze the tiles around the tub white (we also had contractors rip some down so now tiles only are around the shower and as a baseboard) but it looks SOOOO much more zen now and it was not that expensive. We've had the glazed tiles for 2 years and not one spot of mold or dirt has shown. Seriously, this stuff is tough as nails!

DO NOT paint over these tiles! If you want to go more masculine, go with the black/ silver/ whatever wall color suggestions. I once lived in a pre-war with tiling that was painted over white. I had no idea what was underneath the 50 layers of peeling paint, so one day I took a razor blade to a section to see what was underneath - and viola! classic deco tiles just like this. I then spent a good month using harsh chemicals and razors to undo all that paint. Thank god my bathroom was about a 1/4 the size of this one. My fingers still hurt. Don't put a future owner/ renter through that same fate.

And don't sweat the variations in replacement tile. "Celebration" tip #1: We call that "patina." ;)

Different shades of pink makes it even better!

What I would want to do in a space like this is tone down the contrast. So, I'm really coming around to the gray walls idea. I can even imagine--ever so slightly--silver wallpaper with some kind of black pattern. Replacing the black toilet seat with a white one, repainting the radiator cover all one color (I think black), and doing the window frame and treatment in black would all alleviate some of the contrast craziness. I really don't think you want more than three colors: pink (shades of), black and chrome/gray. You know what might look sharp? Painting the wall to right of the toilet--the wall with the light fixture--black. Just that one wall. Or maybe doing just that wall with wallpaper.

posted by Jeffery on 2006-06-07 16:41:16

One note on the glazing for the naysayers--it is NOT paint. It is almost like a layer of porcelain over the tiles that looks just like brand new tile and (so far) it doesn't peel. So you wouldn't be able to razor off layers like in daisyh's case. I confirmed with my husband we did use Miracle Method. It took about a day. If only our contractors on the rest of the reno were so quick...

The tile isn't that bad - I still love it. Spend your $$ on the mirror, floor storage, paint, art, towels, curtains, blinds, etc and you won't notice that off-colored tile.

Also, about the radiator cover. Someone had a good idea to make a new one that was bigger with storage so it would look balanced. I would take it one step further and custom design one that had a storage area that took advantage of the heat from the steam so you could have warm towels in winter.

As for nudie art -- I just like it because my grandparents had nudie, foil wallpaper in their bathroom and I remember thinking it was sooo naughty and funny. But it isn't for everyone. I think it works in this space because it is a bit of a silly and fun space to begin with. If this was MY bathroom, I would find, ahem apologies in advance, art that focuses on the glamor of the derriere!

Looked at the pictures in your slideshow -- if anyone gets as close up to the grout as you did in that one picture, smack them. The varying shades of pink seem mainly to be in the shower, so they're not noticeable with the curtain drawn, and you can install a very soft, sexy, dim light to light the shower area so that you don't notice them that much either. Don't fight it, baby -- GO with this bathroom.

grey, go grey! a darker grey (yes, mitch!).
or black + white stripes, or wallpaper, run w/ it, i think that crowd's got the best advice (then again Enrique's suggestion sounds rich too...).

posted by orangred on 2006-06-07 17:43:28

I would go for a deep dark grey to take away the ultra feminine feel. If you want to bring it all together, add a black frame around the mirrors and get black suede panel curtains. Adding a third color will definitely draw away from the pepto pink..and blend all the colors together.

aahh! this is just like our bathroom, except much larger, in much better shape, and without the weird salmon-colored floor and water-stained soundproof-tile ceiling. well, okay, this bathroom is a lot nicer, but has the same general color scheme. We've been considering painting chocolate brown or a crazy bright green. But if it were possible, I'd go for wallpaper.

The additional pics change it for me. I like a deep, dark "greige" (gray-beige); and nickel fixtures, accessorries, lighting, etc.

What exactly is so "ultra feminine" about this bathroom? The pink tile? The frilly curtain? What is wrong with "ultra feminine" anyway? And what exactly would an "ultra masculine" bathroom look like? An outhouse shed? Football posters? I just don't think in those kinds of terms, where gender is clearly demarcated. Yes, I know that makes me a freak.

Ugh! I had this bathroom and I tried EVERYTHING. Finally, a friend came over and told me to throw a lot of white at it.

FORMULA:
1. Benjamin Moore Super White on every paintable surface; Rustoleum white on the mirror frame.
2. White toilet seat cover.
3. Long gauyzy semi-sheer curtains (try Ikea's gauzy ones) to curtain off the toilet area.
4. Same long gauzy semi-sheers in front of a regular white or transparent shower curtain.
5. An orchid or such on top of the radiator.
6. Plush white towels.

I promise it will look fine. The pink will recede with an abundance of white and you will be left with something very livable and light.

So many great suggestions here, good luck with deciding! We've lived with the same 30's tile (ok, ours is yellow and black) through 4 different decorating incarnations: metalic foil wallpaper, tile color faux paint (yikes), a masculine, greek key border (eh), and now dove white paint. The greyish white dove paint wins, serving as background color to good quality/beautiful lighting, medicine cabinet and silver and crystal accessories. We dumped the radiator cover, stripping the radiator and leaving it bare metal. On the windows are simple shutters also painted white. All our personal junk is out of sight and really thick white towels are what you see first upon entering. Does it get any better than thick white towels, flattering lighting and clear surfaces?

Oh my, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the bath, and I LOVE the multiple tones, I don't care if they are arranged in a random order or in a pattern or a combination of both. You may rent out your bathroom to me and I will live in there.

Go visit dear Magnaverde's site:
http://www.magnaverde.com/
Click on Album One at the top and scroll down to Art Deco Fantasy. That's a peachy color, those peach-pink colors that kind of were similar, I just LOVE.

Look at the mirrror idea, with the vertical lighting on each side, and the shades of pink going around it.

My favorite picture of the batch is 2377, the one that looks like four shades of peachy-pinky beauty.

The only thing I can think of off-hand, and maybe it's already been said, is to have a radiator cover built to the same width as the niche it's in, under the window.

AND, perhaps having it built so that there are cabinets, going up each side of the window to the black row of tiles on the top.

That's where your extra bath tissue goes, right next to the cool toileting room. That's dead space anyway. The window niche. The radiator won't let you stand there, and you can't possibly get into the cubby on the right with the pipe. The left side of the window has some other metal thing-a-ma-bob.

Cabinets could be made to accomodate both of those necessary metal items, as well as providing useful storage, a place to sit other than the toilet or tub (like if you're putting on socks), and having a top portion on which you may display objects, have plants (next to the window), or just to accumulate dust.

You don't have under the sink storage. So this will take the place of that.

Speaking of under the sink, again, the brilliant layout, for cat lovers. I bet a hooded cat box would fit nicely under there.

That will eliminate all the jumble of stuff on the glass shelves, leaving those open for...uh...more stuff. Other stuff.

Say, can you get a shot of the glass shelf wall and the entry too? There are parts of the room I can't see in the pictures.

I'm thinking here. I have to go reread all the posts and then think some more. I have to find some art prints and repaint the upper portion of the room. I LOVE that bathroom.

my first thought is to make the walls very stong to balance the tile work. anne has the right idea DOROTHY DRAPER as inspiration. a bold leaf pattern would be great with wood blinds on the windows. visit the museum of the city of new york's dorothy draper exhibit or check out carleton varney's book on draper's work.

LOVE THIS!

If you're not one to play up the potential kitsch factor...how about sueding the walls in an onyx color which would add a manly texture. And be BOLD AND MANLY in your window treatment choice. Maybe get a much larger mirror for over the sink with a strong black and chrome frame and hide what's on the shelves somewhere.

And keeping with the MANLY theme, any accessories need to be CHROME BABY! Except the black or clear shower curtain and big ass black rug for when you hop dripping wet out of your shower.

And, as always, lighting is key.

Having said that about our yellow/black bathroom, we also have a lavender with lavenbeige tile bath in which I hung lavender flocked wallpaper in a wide stripe between floral stripe and it rocks. I think it's about working with the flashy tile, but having another element that draws your eye away from it, if you know what I mean. Yea, you do. Can't wait to see what you do!

Here's your new art, with what should be a grey background color (which will be grey until I change background colors again).

Note the pinkish stripe along the side of the car.

Second print, could be used in the toilet room, it's got red:

Yes, those are good "guy" prints, with autos, transportation, and the word "Hard" in there.

Is that a standard sized shower curtain on the railing shown in the reflection of the mirror? Or is it some custom size?

Shower curtains:

The one I'm looking for doesn't appear to be online, or maybe it's discontinued. It was silver. Shimmery silver fabric. It was, I think, the Swell line, that also had bright colored washclothes with the same silver trim. I don't want the washclothes, just the silver curtain. I mean silver reflective metallic fabric. Really neat. Glamourous.

Okay, anyway, check out the art prints and the background color for the art prints and see if you like them.

I WANT YOUR BATHROOM!!!

That is sooooo amazing - I love these old tiled bathrooms with the lovely edging tiles - yes I would kill for this bathroom too!! - I only wish I could afford a sink like that - its gorgeous - and I love that your loo is in a little alcove!

I personally would go with a lovely soft lime green wall up top - paint all the woodwork black (like someone above said, make the whole window area black) and have any accessories silver and art deco style - it will look fab!

posted by Violetsrose on 2006-06-08 08:30:16

I'm not liking the gray. It doesn't have anything to do with the room. When you have this much pink, it's necessary to recogize it. However, I love the show curtain.

Sorry about the double post. Actually lime green or celedon would be a wonderful color to use. They've been using pink and green together in Palm Beach for decades. You could call it your Palm Beach bathroom, and some people would love it.

I personally have a Palm Beach home, (in color only), and I love it. But you can't be afraid of color.

Okay, if you're REALLY brave you could try a vintage wallpaper like this:

Or, this:
http://www.secondhandrose.com/paperb/3.htm

I second, third, and fourth all comments are leaving the tile as is. It's fantastic! But the wall colour and frilly curtain are doing the pink and black a great injustice.

posted by Niki on 2006-06-08 11:20:35

Team Decor, grey has as much to do with pink, black, and white as green does. LOL! Anyway, I went over to www.colorcharts.org, and searched for Lime Green, and found three. Searching for Celedon brought many choices, and I selected one of them. Then I plugged all four colors into the bathroom.

No, I KNOW you didn't say cram all the colors in there. ;) Two of the greens are hard to tell apart. The Celedon Green I chose ends up looking blue. And the bright Lime Green is nauseating.

Something about certain green shades, especially with that pink...uh...dang, it was like what one of Becky Yazdan's paintings did to me. There's just something about certain colors paired together that are in certain shades that do something to me. Geez, even looking at the color sample at the Colorcharts site had me holding my stomach.

Click back on the Man-Bath link, and the green should show up as "next". I actually can't leave it up too long. Well, I can, I just can't check the page too often. I actually can't look at the bright green without getting queasy.

By the way, it would be interesting to know if anyone else gets physically ill from seeing a color. And if so, what color?
I like neon green. The "new" safety color of some street signs and fire trucks, that bright green, but it's DIFFERENT than the green in the picture. And the green in the picture hurts my eyes to look at it, and makes me sick to my stomach if I stare at it, and I get dizzy.

Does anyone else have "Color Nausea"??? And is there a better word or phrase for such a thing if it does exist? Like is it studied? Are there universal nauseating colors? Is it all developed or innate? Is it cultural? Was I probed by an alien of that color range?

posted by Andrée on 2006-06-08 12:07:56

Fascinating! Both the "problem" and all the suggestions! Wow!

Here's my contribution. I say print out all these ideas, cut them up and attach them to index cards.
Read, shuffle, dream.

When I was preparing to turn my bottle green (walls and ceiling, white trim around the big windows) bathroom, I used the behr.com and benj. moore websites to play with color combos for weeks. And when I finally hit on my "Easter egg" pink-plum and yellow combo, I knew it was right for me in my heart and I have been very happy with it.

Invest a lot of time in your thought and imagining before you do. Benjamin Moore has software which would let you use digital photos to "paint." I would definitely try that.

I also like the idea of a rad cover redo with storage space.

And most of all--- whatever you do, PLEASE give us AFTERs!!

Great problem. Great bathroom. Have fun!!!

How about a cool grey paint with crips white tailored window treatments. Black monograms would be an added oomph. Don't tone it down. Play with it.

Andree, a color that disturbs me ill is that neither-here-nor-there beige/greige that many people choose when they are afraid of color. And then they get that Berber carpeting that looks like squashed oatmeal. Nothing ever looks completely clean in that color range. And it's all so indecisive! Accent colors tend to be peach and taupe. It all reads like cheap hotel/airport lounge to me. It makes me sad.

I have just describled my mother-in-law's home, btw. Talk about making one sad.

Mold is likely growing deep in your wall on the paper backing of your wallboard, so I'd tend not to worry too much about wallpaper being a huge culprit.

Um, isn't Palm Beach style pretty much defined by the "Lilly Pulitzer" aesthetic?

Andree, how nauseated does a person have to be for it to count?

Most pale, grayed blue-based colors leave me queasy, including Pat's Awful Oatmeal and Terrible Taupe, that Martha Stewart gray-lilac color that was so hot a couple years ago, and many supposedly soothing shades of green.

But as I said, that's me. Having not been to Palm Springs since I was a kiddie, it may have changed. If so, please don't disillusion me.

Unfortunately, the one we bought has pink tile, and a terrifying mix of gray, black tiles with a hideous black striped wallpaper that runs up the tall walls and over the ceiling. I get vertigo every time I go in there. You have a beautiful classic mid-century bathroom. I agree on the chrome additions. It's gotta be a conversation starter...

Absolutely paint the walls & trim dark chocolate brown. Pink and brown are a very chic & modern combo - definitely the best way to embrace the pink if the desired result is a masculine vibe. Replace the frilly curtain with a blind or shade and get rid of the rug snuggling the toilet.

Like so many others, I'm jealous. For myself, I'd go with a black on black flocked damask wallpaper, an over the top chandelier, and perfume bottles everywhere.

I have a similar pink tile bathroom (only I don't have the black tile trim) that had me puzzled as well. After 4 years of living with it - I finally decided to go with a bold Black, White and Pink striped wallpaper above the tile, paint my woodtone vanity white or maybe black (haven't decided yet) and use black and white photos on the walls. The reasoning is the wallpaper is so bold it may help to tone down the pink tile and will help to draw your eye up. The striped wallpaper I found is in a book called "stripes & toiles". You can find it at many of the online wallpaper sites. Good Luck to you (and to me!)
