Hello AT,
We have been slowly working on updating our living room, and now we are at a point where we are very happy with the wall color, the floor and the furniture. However, we can't for the life of us choose new curtains. Any suggestions?
Thanks! Alexis

Dear Alexis,
For your first time, take it easy and go white. You have enough dark furniture and A LOT of putty color on the walls, so brighten it up with nice, simple white or slightly off-white cotton or linen curtains that go down to the floor.
What would make a big difference as well is a RUG! That and the curtains you will be living in a totally different environment.

I like rattan shades for your room.

I like the idea of something grand that goes cieling to floor (since your bookcase is large).

You definitely need a rug. But where's your sofa and coffee table? Are they behind the blue chair in the 2nd pic?
Hmmm, I personally have reservations about the wall color as it too closely resembles the tones in your desk, dining table, and floors...

Floor-to ceiling (light) drapes look like the way to go- the room needs height because your bookcases are so close to the height of the windows. Can you put the bookcases together, between the windows, with the same full-length curtains on both sides? Those windows are small in scale compared to length of that wall, so perhaps cheat the curtains out in width further than the windows (to give the illusion of bigger windows).

Hello! This is Alexis and that's my living room. We banished the coffee table in favor of floor space for our 2-year-old (which she obviously uses!), and the sofa because we wanted space to have more than one upholstered chair/sofa. Behind the blue chair in the second picture is the kitchen counter, which is like a peninsula dividing the kitchen and living room. There is also a little side table by one of the chairs.
I've also been noticing that the wall color does look very putty-ish and the lighter woods seem to blend right into it in these photos. I suspect this is to some degree a trick of the camera (never know, though; looking at photos so often points out something I've totally missed for months!). I think long white curtains, as suggested, will help break it all up and provide more contrast behind the table and desk.
Also, we are in the market for a rug, as suggested. I'm leaning towards something tremendously thick and comfy...
Thanks!!!

I wouldn't do *completely* floor to ceiling - that would scrunch together the floor and ceiling, and make the ceiling look even lower than it is. I'd leave at least 3-6 inches free at the top. (I also like the idea of flat panels or shades, to keep things calm.)

And what about a box to corral the toys that aren't being used at the moment?
