Dear Sarah,

We post your question in the hopes that someone will have a better answer than us, since we have never had upholstered furniture made from scratch. That said, we've also found that it is far more expensive to make something from scratch. In a sense you are paying someone to build your own design. We've found that you are best off buying something off the shelf and then having them modify or upholster it to your liking.

That said, we totally understand when you like something but the dimensions won't work for you.

Does anyone have a resource for Sarah either in her area or in the Eastern region???

A grain of salt. The thing that makes Donghia so wonderful is their slender side profiles. No one else does it quite the same way. They have their own factor(y)ies to keep the secret a secret. The salt is for a manufacturer who says they can match the shape exactly. They'll only get close and it might be more expensive than specifying the real thing. Donghia makes endless variation / customization on every style they introduce.

That said....New York has Long Island City. Chicago has a district and LA has Compton where lots and lots of upholstery gets made. The North Carolina factories are larger scale and lower end.

Pick one you can actually go and check on.

Hi Sarah,

The best custom shop in NYC is Classic Sofa on 22nd Street. As for the North Carolina factories, they are just that , factories and typically are only interested in large scale production runs, not single custom pieces.

To add to Scott's expert advice, Donghia is a FRIM believer in design integrity (a strict no knock-off policy) and big-time enforcer of design rip-off.

So, if your heart is set on a Donghia piece, don't make a big deal about the brand when you ask an upholsterer to make it for you.

Scott--do you have a specific place in LIC that you can recommend? I have a couple of chairs (and a headboard) that I need to re-upholster. Unfortunately, "The Furniture Joint" is out of my budget, but perhaps there would be a more affordable resource in LIC.

If anyone else have a reco, I'd really appreciate it!

I'm in DC and we have had great success with David Edward out of Baltimore. They have a great line of their own furniture and they make equally great custom.
Good Luck!!

Following up on Patrick's comment - I wouldn't discuss any design name AT ALL when having work done custom. It's tacky and no one with any integrity will do a knock off as it is not legal. So, do what eveyone in the trade does. Take a photo of the chair - using trace paper - make a sketch with notes and the desired dimensions of what you want. You may want photos of specific details - not necessarily taken from the chair you want to knock off - such as how the leg intersects with the upholstered seat or how the piping should look.

Semi-related... anyone in NYC to recommend a local manufacturer who will do furniture prototypes (case goods, and a lighting fixture)?

MLB and Mr. Patrick.....I don't have a good LIC resource. Afraid I'm out of that loop.

Sarah - There is an individual near High Point, NC who can do custom work replicating high end designs. His name is Glenn Laughlin and his phone number is 336-431-6602. Glenn's main business is reupholstery, but he also specializes in building prototypes for many of the local furniture manufacturers. They show him a picture or drawing and he builds the furniture from scratch.
Glenn has been in business for over 30 years. He is not particularly fast, but is very dependable. North Carolina Senator John Edwards is one of his repeat customers. He is not very expensive for the quality and type of work he does.
