Good Questions: Cute & Mod in Queen or King?

1-16-squares.jpgHello AT,

I just purchased a queen pillow top mattress and am wondering if instead of a queen super-size down comforter, could a king size work or is it just too big? I cannot find any interesting duvets in super-size.

Also I would love to know if anyone out there knows where I could find cute, mod duvet covers in queen super-size.

Thanks, Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

A piece of advice I wish we could have taken that was received when we were getting married: always buy a comforter one size bigger than your bed. So all the more if you share your bed, go bigger. Can't speak to the aesthetics of how it will hang, but it must be comfortable to be the single piece of advice some good friends gave to us!

Good luck.

Hi, Jennifer:

We bought a king-size coverlet for our queen-size bed because we have it up on risers (for extra storage space underneath). It works fairly well and definitely makes it less obvious that we've raised the bed well off the floor. Not sure how this info. plays into your plans, but if the bed weren't on risers, the coverlet would definitely drag on the floor. It is quite nice to have a bit extra—my husband and I don't fight over the covers nearly as much as we used to.

Sorry to say I have no guidance about queen super-size bedding....

good luck!

I guess it would depend on the exact dimensions of the the duvet, but I'd try Amenity Home.

I've always had a king comforter - even when I had a double. A boyfriend advised me of it back in the day, and I've never looked back. It will hang like a bedspread on a double. It will be a little shorter on a queen, but I think it looks fine. It's also nice and toasty.

Now that I have a king however, I'm not sure of what to do, since there's nothing bigger, and now the husband and I fight over the comforter.

Another option is to have two twin sized duvets on a queen or king sized bed. It's what my husband and I have always done, and it makes it easy for each of us to have covers and not disturb the other when one of us gets up early or comes to bed late. Also, twin sized duvet covers are often very cheap and you can have lots of cool ones.

This one is rather mod. Run a search on eBay for "queen duvet" and scroll through the listings to see what catches your eye.

My company carries several lines of ready made bedcoverings. In a couple of the spec books, the super queen and the king size duvets (the down fillers) have the exact the same measurements. The duvet covers themselves differ slightly, but just not that much.

Jackie in Phoenix-
Look for "California King" - they're harder to find, but they are out there, and are larger than king.

I have a pillow top queen size mattress and I wouldn't consider anything but a king size duvet or quilt. The bed is up so freakin' high that the duvet comes nowhere near the floor.

I agree w/ previous posts recommending to buy your comfortor one size larger than your bed. We have a queen bed sitting a foot above the floor, and the king comfortor is only on the floor at the end of the bed -- the sides hang above the floor.

While the "buy one size up" rule may generally work, I'd advise taking a moment to consider the dimensions of the duvet in relation to how it will hang on your bed given the height of the bed and thickness of the mattress and boxspring.

We automatically bought a king duvet for our queen bed, and the duvet hits the floor on all three sides. Drives me absolutely up a wall -- hate the look.

I found this link and it has to do with various bedding measurements.

JG-A California King is actually longer and narrower than a regular king. I always thought it was bigger until we bought our bed.

Hunter,
So when you make the bed, how do you make it look nice? Do you overlap the two twin comforters, or what?
