Good Questions: Desk That Also Works For Dining?

10-30-dining-desk.jpg

I have a studio so I'm always looking for ways to make my furniture multi-usage. I am in need of a desk that can also be purposed as a dining table and I'm in LOVE this desk that I saw at Crate and Barrel:
Spotlight Desk. The only problem is that bar at the bottom that prevents my guests from sitting on the other side! Any ideas on where I can find one similar to this that I can use as both a desk and a dining table? Thanks AT! Alison

I looked all over the intarwebz for similiar piece - couldn't find it. Instead: Baby, I would just detach it. Or saw it off! (or have a handyman do it) This would be very easy if it's a "ready to assemble" bit of furniture.

And if it felt wobbly - I'd reattach it at the crux by using a small bore drill bit, wood glue and some small dowels. It seems like the legs are real hard wood, so you would not have any problem drilling.

If it did not feel wobbly I'd just leave it off.

I'd get a local craftsman/carpenter to make you exactly what you wanted.

I just saw this one today at cb2 - and it's only $199! May want to make sure the height will work for both first though.

The Room and Board Parsons Table is a good choice. Lots of size and top options and it's extremely sturdy with that steel frame. Wish I had the cash.

You'd only be able to sit along one side of the desk. The backside of it has a bar along the bottom of the legs, which would make for an uncomfortable seating. And you couldn't put anyone on the ends. So unless you plan on seating your guests lunch counter style, you might be better off finding a more flexible design. Someone above mentioned a Parsons table/desk. Sounds like just the thing.

I have the spotlight desk. It is from the ready to assemble line at C&B, so you have to put it together yourself. Easy. Just don't attach that bar... viola! It's pretty sturdy, I can't imagine it being a problem not having that bar there. Here's a photo for scale. I bet you could seat 4 people around it, good idea!

The Z Gallerie one seems perfect. The others at 36" deep seem too wide. I love the flip top that extends the 15.5" top to 31." And the quality seems reasonable for the price. Gets my vote.

i think you'd like a "flip top console". these can be desks, sofa tables, or dining tables. they come up on ebay with some frequency. a lot of midcentury designers did them; as an example:

I considered this desk for that very use:

This one has a bar as well but the bar is far enough up and far enough in that I don't think it would pose a problem for guests. This desk is a dead ringer for the Maxalto Simplice desk. Try going to your local B&B Italia and see if the bar poses a problem.

hi all,
alison here. i think the z-gallerie table looks great but i'm looking for a regular height table instead bar height... i like the idea of getting the c&b spotlight desk and just not assembling that last bar in the back. i really love that desk and can't stop thinking about it! let's just hope it doesn't fall apart when i put my turkey on it during thanksgiving!
thanks for all your help!
