Good Questions: Dining Set Like Londong Urchin's?

5-25-london.jpg

Hello AT,

Inspired by the fabulous table and chairs in London Urchin's apartment (left)--which would be the perfect solution for our small breakfast nook--I've been looking for a set using the same ingenious design (where the chairs fit into table when not in use)...

Aside from haunting CL and hoping to find a glorious bargain antique, the only such set I've found is the Ikea Fusion (right)--which I'm just not crazy about. Does anyone know where else to find affordable versions of this clever table/chairs design?

Thanks! Sarah

Anyone??

I saw the same dining set as London Urchin's in a furniture store on Bond Street between Bowery and Lafayette in NYC. Was there about two weeks ago. Can't remember the name of the store though--they have a mix of new stuff and vintage. This dining set was all the way in the back.

I am obsessed with this set as well. That dining set is made by Danish (Finnish??, maybe some other erudite APT'er knows more about him) designer, Hans Olsen, for Frem Rojle, probably around 1955. There is another style similiar to The London Urchin apartment one, but the chair sits on 3 legs. It is adorable! And is commonly referred to as Round Table and 4 Tripod Chairs. I see them for sale periodically on ebay or various vintage stores in NY.

Baxter and Liebchen in DUMBO sometimes has a set like this for sale. If you're outside New York, they have a website.

We had this dining set in our kitchen when I was a kid. As I remember, it's teak, 1960's and made by a Danish designer.

I was under the impression that Hans Olsen was Swedish, but I could be wrong. That store that you're thinking of on Bond St. is called ModernLink. I saw the same table and chairs there, but I believe that it has since been sold. One can find these on eBay for around $1000 or so.

there's a store in vancouver called metropolitan home that gets them in regularly. they're not cheap. a friend found the table minus the chairs at a thrift shop for $100 though and is collecting chairs one at a time.
