Good Questions: Do Leather Repair Kits Work?

liquid-leather.jpgHello AT,

I have an old leather couch with a rip on one of the seat cushions. Does anyone have experience with those leather repair kits? I paid $300 bucks on craigslist a year ago for the couch, so I don't want to spend a load repairing it.

Thank you Thank you!! rr

Dear rr, we haven't used one of these, so this is for the crowd. Anyone?

I may not be the best judge but when I tried it on my aunt's naugahyde wingback -- of course it was not leather and I was but a teenager -- no, it did not work for me.

I've seen the end results of repair kits and the colors hardly ever match.

I have the same issue with a leather chair that I bought at the Chelsea flea market for $200. I've been toying with the idea of having the seat reupholstered, but I'm not sure it's worth it...sorry, I'm not much help, but I would most definitely be interested to see, if anyone has an answer.

They work great - but you have got to be very very talented to do a good job and make it look right. Other wise it will end up looking just terrible.

Better to make a little tiny design statement with a whipstitch or crossweave in nylon or leather cording. The kits will look not-good.

My cat put ssome claw marks in the corner of my black leather sofa. I tried to use a repair kit to fill in the pin holes, but after the first couple holes, I realized the pinholes look better than the repair. I don't recommend the kit, but if you try it, do yourself a favor and test it in an area that's not visible.

Yep, they do work. You have to make sure that you match the color exactly, or else you will see it. If the rip is in a non-super obvious spot, then you don't have to have an exact match. Spend a few minutes on the web looking up color theory about how to match that blue exactly. When to add green, etc, this will help.

But to answer your question, YES, if you can match the color, then they work fine.

is leather rain proof or will it ruin the leather to wear during rainy weather

The kits require lots of practice for just a mediocre result. Take a picture of the tear with your cellphone and see what a pro will charge.

Take it from someone who has been doing leather repair for years..... It takes a lot of practice and experience to be able to not only repair an area, make it flexible enough to last, and blend in the color to match.. Ad that to the fact the these kits do not have the best product available. In most cases it is worth it to at least get a quote from a local Leather Repair Expert before attempting a repair yourself..

If you have a rip call a pro.. These types of repairs take a lot of practice.. Think about this.. You have to prep the area apply a subpatch.. attach the patch.. Line up the torn area... Fill in the cracks buff the area down .. and apply a grain to match... After you get that as close as you will be able to on your very first try ever... You will then have to use sub standerd color dyes to try and blend the color To match your leather.. This step alone I have personally been able to train very few poeple to become good at.. The color needs to be sprayed on... You spent good money on your leather.. Why not pay a small fee to have someone repair the area that has exprience? With that said think about this... It takes me longer to remove a bad repair and then do a proffessional one than it does to get the first shot... Owner http://mobileleatherservice.com

The repairs do work on certain ares, seat cushions are NOT recomended for repairs, do to the high wear of the area, any reapir done to this areas will come undone in no time at least the color will come undone.

I live in Athens, GA near Atlanta and have a sofa and loveseat damaged by dogs. In one case big chunks torn out. Does anyone know of someone in surrounding area who can repair these? Thanks

Not an answer but a question. Everyone is saying it isn't good to put a patch on a highly used spot. I have a huge c rip about the size of my hand spread out and it is located where your back would be. Would that be consiter a highly used spot. At this point even a bad patch would look better than this huge rip. Also if I did want it to be professionally done would I have to transport my couch or would they come to my house. Any answers will help.
