Good Questions: Do You Know This DIY Book?

12-12-diygif.jpgHello AT,

When I was in art school three decades ago, I bought a book on furniture built with Plywood, pipes and 1x2's.

Strong, aesthetic, spacesaving, budget kind and Hippy. Ideal for the Whole Earth Catalog books only it came from the How To Do It bookstore in Philadelphia.

I have been trying to find title and author of this book again to begin re-designing my one room living and working space. Do you know?

Thanks, Donna

Donna, This is beyond us, but hopefully not the crowd. Anyone?

I built a bookcase and a desk using 1x12 boards, a 3x6 sheet of wood, and plumbing pipes once. it came out great. i don't think you need a book as much as the will to experiment.
the outcome is rather industrial but it's a great conversation piece.

Go straight to the public library and tell the librarian what you are looking for. I remember seeing a book just like what you describe, from the sixties/seventies in the building/carpentry section. You'd be surprised.

you should search on Ebay. i have bought several old school 60s era carpentry books on there (and the goods look suspiciously like Blu Dot)

I know!! Its called , "Nomadic Furniture," by James Hennessey and Victor Papanek. I stole it off my parents' bookshelf years ago (and subsequently picked up "Nomadic Furniture 2" at a used bookstore), but I'm sure you can easily find it online. Paperback, hand-lettered, and definitely a product of its times, but with some great and timeless ideas. There is a reference to "a promising young architect named Frank Gehry," and thoughts on the importance of beds as a space for lovemaking. Ah, the 70s.
