Good Questions: Does Anyone Make The Barcelona Chair in Fabric

2004_7_question mark.jpgDo you happen to know if there is a manufacturer of the Barcelona chair (aka the Pavilion Chair at DWR) that doesn't use leather? The Barcelona chair is maybe the prettiest chair ever, but I don't like leather...not even a little. Got any tips? Thanks, Kelley

Sorry, Kelley, we don't have a good lead, but it might be worth calling up White on White and seeing if they could do it for you. They sell a knock off for $600 and handle a lot of manufacturing. Other than that, you might just buy the chair and have the cushions custom made. Anyone else? MGR

While we are talking about White-On-White, how are their quality on the knock-offs? I'm not in NYC and so would love to hear first hand experience/opinion.

Re: The Barcelona Chair question.

Check out the Chicago chair (which is an almost identical knockoff of the Barcelona chair) at http://urbanoutfitters.com. It is made of vinyl in black or white colors. It costs only $220.

I saw the knock off Barcelona at Urban Outfitters, but contacted the manufacturer directly hoping to find a better price. It worked. Sitcom furniture makes the "Chicago" chair in vinyl and fabric. See photos on their site: http://www.sitcomfurniture.com/

Send an e-mail to the address on the site with your zip code and they'll provide dealers in your area.

A few years ago there was a fabric-covered Barcelona chair copy in the Crate & Barrel catalogue. I just checked their site and I don't see it online, but you could contact them and ask if they still have one...

Since you're not looking for pristine original leather (because you're considering reupholstering), it seems like this would be a great opportunity for you to get a real deal on an original on Ebay or elsewhere... since condition of upholstery really drives the prices for those seeking an original, you wouldn''t have that concern. (I got a similar deal on the van der Rohe Pavilion coffee table, beacuse I didn't want the glass top...) But choose your reupholsterer wisely. I believe this is a "deceptively simple" chair to get right. Let a pro guide you on what grade/weight of fabric will handle the necessary construction of the cushions. Good luck.

You've answered a question for me! My dad bought "barcelona" chairs in Belgium during the late 1950s or early 1960s made of wood and strung with a tan durable chord. I still have them and they are wonderful although a little worse for wear after all of these years. I've never seen the style anywhere else except for now, when I hopped a link from the nytimes.com website to apartmenttherapy.com and found this blog about "barcelona" chairs. Now I know a little more about the style and name of these great chairs.

I'm with Kelley on trying to find cool furniture that is leather-less (not even one bit). There have to be more of us out there, and where there is demand, there is a market opportunity. Holla!

You can get the barcelona chair aka chicago chair at Chiasso
Go to Chiasso.com
it's a good site and you can get them with or without leather. They are reasonable in price too. Under 300 for both chair and ottomon if not mistaken.

If the web address isn't right, then search google. You'll get to it somehow I promise :)

Hi everyone -

When considering purchasing the Barcelona chair, there is NO aka (enter other name) option. All of those chairs are fake and do not carry the same high-end manufacturing quality as purchasing one from Knoll--the ONLY authorized manufacturer of the chair. Mies van der Rohe (the designer of the chair) would be appalled by this blog.

Mies originally intended the chair to be sold in leather, hence why it is still currently sold that way today. Origninally, the chair was designed in white kid leather which is no longer available today.

I would recommend purchasing an original chair. All chairs have been stamped with the designer's name and signature since 1992. You can then have the chair reupholstered, with a warning, that the upholstery for these chairs is very labor-intensive and tricky.

Good luck.

I bought a pair of Barcelona chairs made with wooden frames that measure exactly the same as my Knoll stainless steel ones. Is anyone aware of such an animaL? Who possibly could have made them. They cushions are superbly crafted, but no markings what so ever. Definetly not a garage project. INFO PLEASE!!!!!

I have 2 barcelona chairs , but the cushions and straps are toast. We want to use fabric instead of leather for the cushions. Anyone know of a shop that can do this?
Any leads would be greatly apreciated.

hi, I recently bought a pair of barcelona chairs from a local antique dealer, which were a total mess seemingly, until started clean the gunk and discovered an enduring strong quite heavy chair. All the right stuff was there, 17 straps, pigskin(yes enthusiasts, pigskin), the workmanship is impeccable. one more thing I wanted to mention, is the that the chair comes apart in five pieces, center scarf joints at the top, center, and bottom front of the chair. My curiousity was up to say the least, "no company would do this much work to produce this chair, and turn a profit", so research I did. I found out that these chairs were the third in a series of changes done by mies, before knoll bought rights, the upholstery on one is great, the other is a bit shot, but never the less, it's exciting to own this piece of history. My question is, should I redo these or leave em alone? any opinions would be appreciated and considered.

Please be warned: DO NOT BUY FURNITURE FROM MODERNREPRODUCTIONS.COM! The operation is a scam and they take your money and never deliver your furniture. There are many other Apartment Therapy posts that give similar accounts. I only saw the posting above by John Christopher (who apparently runs a bunch of furniture scams) and blindly trusted the advice to find a website that touted 50% off all items as well as free shipping with a pending due date. If you go to their site you will see that the same deal is still being offered. Don't fall for it. I only wish there had been a warning on this thread before I was duped.
