Hello AT,
I am a big fan of Apartment Therapy, despite my wife calling me a "big nancy" when I refer her to your site, I was wondering if you would be able to steer me in the right direction. I am a follower of all things Modern and while walking through the Goodwill, here in Milwaukee, I saw a desk with a beautiful finish and when I looked at the front I saw distinctive clapboard drawer fronts...

Inside the top drawer is an original price sticker with a date(3/52) and store badge from Marshall Fields. I bought it on the spot for $29.00 before the "vultures started to hover around".
I have checked the internet and ebay and I have been unable to find anything similar. I would like to find out if this a Knoll piece of any value?
Sorry about the photos, which are for reference only, I have not moved it in the house yet because I told my wife I was going to resell it. I can stage some interior shots if you like.
Thanks, Robert
Anyone??
Dear Big Nancy (I love your wife),
It is a lovely piece. I assume you have checked all the drawers and the underside of the desk? Even without a manufacturer I think you'll do well on Craig's or ebay.
It looks Dutch to me... although Knoll did very similar drawer fronts and legs... see link...
Great piece -- regardless or origins, you got it for a great price!
Yes it has great aesthetic value! That is a wonderful piece and I could use it in my place. Wish I had an artful hubby. Just what is a big nancy anyway?
Looks like a Heywood Wakefield dresser that I own if that helps - same color and overlapping drawers and legs. Although I'm sure many manufactures had similar aesthetics at the time.
The champagne color and sheen on that piece makes wish for your sake that it's a Heywood Wakefield. It probably isn't--it's a little too blocky without the nice routed edges--but have you pulled out all the drawers to look for a maker's mark? nice piece, whatever the case!
Wow that is exactly the kind of desk I've been searching for. I think I may start trolling the Goodwills more often. Great find!
Heather, Thanks for the link. There is an original price sticker inside the drawer that says Knoll desk 172.09 along with the metal Marshall Fields badge. So I am pretty sure it a Knoll. I will look for a Knoll stamp on the desk tonight.
Incredible find.
Your wife is hilarious, but i can completly understand.
That is a great find. Are you planning on selling it?
Just to let you know Robert, (or is this you?) this one says it is from the 70's but it seem to be the same maker. (sorry about the cut and Paste) Those aren't small potatoes! Happy selling.

Who cares what the value of it is? If you like it then it's of value. If it was worth $500 or $5,000 would you want to sell it? The point is that you should collect what you like. I was at an auction one time and loved this leather chair. It looked like a piece that Baker Furniture or Oly Studio would make. I bidded on it and won it for $125. I don't know the actual value of it but every person that comes in to my apartment comments on it. They assume that I spent thousands on it! And all I can think is "That's what you think bitches!!!!"
Boo-hoo, Peter.
Lighten up...you're supposed to be "gay!"
I know some serious designer did a group of furniture that had the angled fronts like that, but I don't recall who. It might have been Gilbert Rhode. I doubt very much that it's from Knoll.
It's a good find at any rate. It looks to be well made, so far as one can tell from a photo. It would be right at home in someone's Eichler bungalow. Design Within Reach has a line of pieces that have similar angled slats, only much narrower.
it looks like Knoll. i own a Knoll chest of drawers that looks exactly like it. tapered legs, angled drawers, frame detail around the drawers. ive also seen a knoll bedside table w the same design.
you might contact lost city arts in la. they sold a similar desk from their inventory....still listed on their site.

Nope, no value at all. I will hence gladly take it off your hands for free :)
