Katy needs some advice: My boyfriend and I just adopted an 8 month old yellow labrador retriever from Lousiana. My boyfriend is a water baby and wants to take the pooch to the beach on the weekends to play, but we have no idea where we're allowed to go! We live on Long Island (Nassau County) but are willing to travel for the right spot. Do you know of any dog-friendly lakes/beaches/rivers/ponds?

I think the ocean beaches in the Hamptons allow dogs after Labor Day. Call the town of Southampton for information.

legally dogs are not allowed on LI beaches at least not on the South Shore from Rockaway to Jones Beach. Hypothetically if I was to walk my hypothetical dog on the hypothetical beach I might hypothetically be able to get away with it before 8am or after 7pm in the Rockaways or there abouts as long as you don't see a green Range Rover on the beach.... but that's just heresay... and make sure you bring poop bags and i've heard that dog walkers as a show of good faith pick up a piece garbage on their way off the beach. :)

i also think hamptons may let dogs on the beach. but i live in the city, and i take my lab to sandy hook beach on the jersey shore. they allow dogs in the "bay side" all year long, and on the ocean side after sept. its great because its never too crowded, and because he is very good, we don't have to keep him leashed up. its one of the very first beaches along the jersey shore, so it wont be too far of a trip for you guys. just look up sandy hook beach and read on it. but from personal experience, i love taking my dog there :) hope you try it out and have fun!

I have a house in Sag Harbor and have been looking for a dog beach where they can enjoy the summers and I can stop walking them in hiding. Unfortunately, the rule has always been "no dogs on the beach" but we were always allowed on until someone complained and called the cops. Aparently, this summers complaints must have reached a record high becuase I received a notice in the mail that no dogs are allowed at any time through out the year. I say screw it... I pay my taxes and I pick up after my dog (and others)!

Used to be that dogs were allowed (or at least overlooked) at the nude beach east of Robert Moses by the lighthouse. Haven't been there in about 5 years. Link below is from 2006.

Went to Gardiner's County Park maybe 2 months ago. Your dog will love it, but the beach part of the equation is a bit lacking.

I grew up on the North Shore of Nassau County, and while some of the town beaches there technically don't allow dogs, it's not too strict at the less crowded beaches as long as you pick up after him. Also, a lot of places on the North Shore have a residential street that ends at a small beach. The residents on that road will bring their dogs down or launch small canoes/kayaks into the water, so you can drive around the small towns and see what roads have water access.
