apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Good Questions: Drop Leaf Table Alternatives?

3-14-sidetable.jpgHello AT,

In my two room studio the kitchen also serves as the living and dining room, with a loveseat-sized couch dividing the space. I'm thinking a drop-leaf table that converts from console-size (15" or so deep) to full-size would be an ideal space saving solution. This model at Jensen-Lewis is the right idea -- I especially like the end drawers -- but it's kind-of ugly...and expensive!

Any suggestions? Thanks, Margaret

Dear Margaret,

On the contrary, we don't think it's that bad (and you can take off the wheels if you like)! But this drop leaf table from ATLA would be a good alternative, especially if it's painted.

This is also a very good link for drop leaf tables.

Anyone else??

Something different, but maybe try a coffee table that converts to a dining table from Calligaris. There's the Eleven, Flexy or Mascotte.

I've seen this before in a Copenhagen here in AZ. Very cool

It's the "SM101"

Wow, Brian I love that table (the SM101). Do you have any idea how much that costs?

Well...it seems there are a few places online that put it between $1200 and $1400. But, I don't ever recall it being nearly that much. This was about two years ago, but I think I remember copenhagen selling it for a bit less? They unfortunately don't have an online showroom, but one table from the same manufacturer sells from them for about $600 less than what the other places online sell it for. I would say you might be looking at around $900-1000 if you can find it somewhere. Still expensive....but I'm not sure what your budget is.

Amanda,

$1k for the cherry or wenge one. Prices go up from there to about $1300 depending on the wood.

We bought this table at IKEA in November. It's not on their US website, but maybe they still have it in stores. I'm pretty sure the US price was less than $200.

I was at Ikea last weekend and saw the table Kristi posted. I really liked it; it was very sturdy. I believe the table cost around $225USD.

However it's less sturdy and doesn't have as much storage space. My Ikea didn't have it so I think I'm going to buy it in Canada this weekend!

i posted a similar question on the sf site... this is what i went with:

but ikea just came out with a really similar table (in pine) for 1/5 the price:

sorry, i just realized you wanted a narrower table with storage, but those are a few alternatives...

The SM101 by Skovby... perfect... EXPENSIVE! But considering it's a console table, kitchen counter, dining table and kitchen storage all in one, it might be worth the $1000. However, at AU$299 (about US$230) Ikea's Bjorkudden is COMPLETELY perfect. I will rush to Ikea Elizabeth and see if they have it.

Or how much do you suppose it would be to ship from Australia?

I just bought this for my new apartment: http://www.willygoat.com/catalogsingle.asp?productID=32227

It was kind of a bear to assemble, but it's compact, and the chairs store right inside. Love it.

This design, which Alsto's lists in two different styles, has been made for many years for the apartment trade. I have one in what looks like mahogany from the 1940's that actually seats eight, not six, people when its three leaves are added, and it is very sturdy, though there is no storage space and you have to find a place for the leaves. But the conversion from console to card-table size requires no leaves and it looks pretty civilized.

I bought the Ikea Bjorkudden two weeks ago here in SoCal. I am very happy with it. My Ikea had plenty in stock, so hopefully Australian shipping won't be necessary :)

Design House Stockholm also manufactures a table that might meet the requirements in white and black. Some places may still have the red. There is also a matching sideboard.

The IKEA one that meredith posted looks great, although you'd have to be careful about tripping over all the left-over parts you'll have.

A friend of mine bought the set from Target Diane linked to, it's not bad but the hinges always felt flimsy. He also had an issue with one of the top right hinges of the little side 'doors' getting stuck. I think it wouldn't be a bad purchase if you could get it sans those chairs, though.

This is a great table for a small apartment from Crate & Barrel. It litterally folds down to half its size without being a drop leaf and you can store your linens or silver or whatever in the table.

I would never buy this table. Where the heck to the chairs fit when it's open, let alone closed.
The end position on the leaf has a leg right in the middle and the center postion has the drawer to you can't get your knees under it. Mount a shelf with a drop down leaf to the wall. When the leaf it up, it would be supported by a bracket, not legs.

I had a hard time finding the same thing. The one I liked the best was on backorder for months. Maybe the situation is different now. The Door store has locations in NYC,one on Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn and a new one in Queens on Queens Blvd.
Taft Drop Leaf Table http://www.doorstorefurniture.com/taft.html
$299
It's good quality and classically handsome.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Ikea Bjorkudden Table and have been eyeing it for months. Problem is-the lacquered birch color won't work with my apartment. But seriously, I have yet to find another table, for that price, that will suit my needs. Any ideas on how/what to refinish it with???? I would be SO grateful!!!!

Wow. The Scandanavians seem to have it all over us when it comes to multi-use drop-leaf tables.
GREAT SUGGESTIONS ALL!

I wound up buying a hand-made table from someone on EBay (it's gorgeous!), but a friend had told me about this while I was on my quest. Click on my name. I would never have thought of Hammacher Sclemmer.

As far as chairs go, we bought 4 of these:

http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15564&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=12825&langId=-1&categoryId=15658&chosenPartNumber=30045016

which are nice and stackable. We hardly ever eat at our table, so these are usually scattered around the house being used as little side tables to put drinks and such on. But when we have company and bust out the table, we gather them up for seating. They match the Bjorkudden table perfectly and are actually quite comfortable. And you can't beat the price.

Is the Bjorkudden in the paper catalog? Because it's not online, and they don't have it at the Seattle IKEA.

posted by Diane on 2007-03-15 16:17:40

Diane,

Yes, it's on page 65 of the online version of the paper catalog that you can browse through. It says it's $179.
