Good Questions: Eco Friendly Paint in NYC?

2004_7_question mark.jpgDear AT,
do you know of a store in NYC (preferably downtown) where you can buy eco-friendly paint and finishes?
Thanks,
Gretchen

Janovic sells Benjamin Moore low VOC paint which is pretty good. It is called Eco-Spec and it comes in almost the full line of colors. You can also try Aglaia, which isn't in NYC, but can send you samples. You can get it at Ecohaus. We knew about Benjamin Moore, but learned about Aglaia via Organic Style here. (Thanks, Gretchen!) I have a catalog from a company called bioshield at bioshieldpaint.com that seems to have a great selection of eco-friendly paints, wall finishes etc.

Hi,
I know of a couple of sources. Check out Bettencourt Green Building Supplies, 3R in Brooklyn or Pure Kitchen. Any of these NY companies can help you. I work for blueHouse, an environmentally friendly home furnishing store in Baltimore, Maryland. We offer BioShield, which is not only no VOC, it is solvent free. If you need help, feel free to call us. Our number is on our website.

I've been on a tear for milk paint for a couple weeks in lower manhattan and on the web and just decided that the Healthy Paint by Anna Sova sold on the third floor of ABC is the best for me. They will match anything you want and have a great selection as is. ABC has their own Silk Co. brand but the selection and service are lame. It does take two weeks between ordering and delivery, but it comes mixed (a lot of milk paints require self mixing and lots of guesstimating) and they will match any fabric swatch or any other paint co. color....
Home Depot also sells BEHR paints which are low-VOC (milk paints are no-VOC).

Try looking for a dist. for Oikos products. They have a line of paint as well as a complete line of professional grade faux finishing products. All completely Eco-friendly not just low in VOC. Plus super durability.

Just at NeoCon here in Chicago. Sherwin Williams has a line now that has the green stamp of approval. Ben Moore has Eco-spec as previously mentioned, but it only comes in 2 tint bases. Talking with the rep. in NY they are planning to even change their tint system down the road. Hopefully they won't be a day late and many dollars short.
