Good Questions: Experience with LoveSac's Modular Sofas?

111.9couch.jpgHello AT,

I am thinking about buying a modular sofa from LoveSac. It looks really interesting and would fulfill my need for constant change.

However, the showrooms are all really far from me. I was wondering, does anyone have any experience with this sofa? Thanks! Rachel

There is a showroom near me in Philadelphia. I have to say they look kind of "teen dorm room-ish". It's not something I would put in my home, at least the sofa. I can maybe understand the GIANT mush ball thing as something quirky for a corner, but not as a major furniture item in my living room. But it all depends on your taste.

I'm sorry, this is totally unhelpful, but I just have to say...LOVESAC?? Seriously? I can't get past that name long enough to even really look at the sofas...

i think the home reserve sofas look more 'sophisticated' (considering they too are puzzle-piece sofas) and for a much lower price point...

You can check these out at Straight From The Crate stores at 61st Ave or 1st Street. They are perfect for Urban Living because they are modular, they are easy to transport, stylish, come with a variety of cover options which can easily be removed and washed. Also you can build and change to any configuration imaginable! An incredible product!!

I'm in Pittsburgh and there's a showroom here. I went to check out the LoveSac couches since my apartment is a converted attic in an old Victorian house and has a very narrow staircase leading up to it, thus I needed a couch that was guaranteed to fit up the stairs. I was definitely disappointed in the quality. The Ultrasuede-style upholstery is very chintzy looking, far beneath anything you'd find at Ikea. The showroom display pieces looked very worn, too.

A friend of mine was considering these. He has a strange apartment with a very confined entry way, and thought that the Sactionals would be an easy (it not the only) way to get a full size couch into his living "area". We spent all day looking at couches at stores all over Manhattan in just about every price range (Levitz to B&B). We looked at the Lovesac Sactional first, then again after lunch, and again in the evening. Before seeing any other options they seemed just barely OK. They are made out of massive amounts of particle board. The regular fabric upholstery is terrible. The ultrasuede-style fabric is acceptable. The real kicker is the price. These are not cheap for what amounts to glorified dorm furniture. Getting enough modules in the suede-ish upholstery to configure anything other than a large love seat easily costs $1500 to $2000. Get fewer modules and you just don't have enough to take advantage of their modular nature. For $2000 you can certainly get better quality sectionals (thanks largely to the very low quality of the Lovesac) form IKEA or West Elm or CB2. Spend more (sectionals are costly) and you will get actual furniture with a proper 10 year lifespan. Spend the same amount on something other than sectionals and you will also come out ahead in quality. Not everyone in in the position to make an "investment" in furniture, nor are a lot of people interested in doing so. However, if you are not going to buy something that you want to keep for a while, you should probably spend just enough to keep yourself satisfied and comfortable.

The Sactionals' cost is just not in line with their low quality.
