Good Questions: Experience with Mshelving?

6-9-mshelving-color.jpg

Hi Apartment Therapy! I've fallen in love with Mshelving from Loadbearing, which was earlier posted on Apartment Therapy and am thinking of ordering a large unit sight unseen. Has anyone ordered or seen shelving? What do you think? They are truly gorgeous & brilliant in modular design. Any thoughts, suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

(Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first. Email questions and pics with QUESTIONS in subject line to: newyork(at)apartmenttherapy(dot)com)

MShelving is distributed in the U.S. by Apartment Therapy reader and Big Window Challenge participant Jane Mount (cofounder of Loadbearing) — while we personally don't own any Mshelving, we are always impressed with the collection when we see it in person at ICFF.

Does anyone have first-hand experience with Loadbearing or Mshelving?

I do have these shelves, and I love them. We have a LOT of books, and they are perfect for books since they are really strong shelves.
We have a 3-parts-wide-shelf with books, 7-parts-high, but in the middle, we have these doors in different colors for our alcohol and other things we don't want to show.
We now are buying a half as high shelf (completely closed) for the childs room. Perfect for toys: In with them, close the door.

The colors are of course different in the homepage of those in real life, so make sure they send you a colour plate before.
I do live in Switzerland, so we went to the store and looked at the colors, but I now see that Loadbearing has even nicer colors than we do have here... :)
To think of: If you close the shelf with the doors, make sure you have either items big enough (as hig as the door) OR you buy a shelf (or even a half as deep shelf) for in between. The doors size is fix.

If you give me an email, I can send you a picture of our bookwall.

Okay, I admit: a friend of mine said, he would rather put these kinds of shelfs in the basement than in a living room. They actually DO come from manufactury storing, as far as I know.

hi, i'm the person who asked the question. i love the industrial/manufacturing/functional look of these shelves & they do actually remind me of shelves my parents had in the basement (of course mshelving is much more chic) as well as eames shelves. AT-Lover, my email is bearclear@gmaildotcom (replace the word dot with an actual dot/period). i'd love to see a photo of your mshelving & i'm happy to hear it holds lots of books. we'll be using it in our bedroom/workspace & it will be holding clothes, equipment, & heavy books. i didn't know jane mount of the big window challenge was the cofounder of loadbearing. she also won the small cool contest a few years back right? good to know as she's got great style.

Hi timmy jr., thanks for the nice words ;) MShelving is actually designed by a friend of mine, Mathias Frei, who manufactures and sells it in Switzerland, and then we bring it over here because we love it so much.

The system can hold over 250 pounds per shelf, so you can put pretty much anything in it: art books, a dj's entire record collection, etc. etc., and even use the lower units as benches if you want.

Where are you located? If you're near NYC you're welcome to come see it in person at our showroom/office, or in San Francisco you can see it in use at the Rare Device store (www.raredevice.net). If you're not near either of those just send us an email at info@loadbearing.com and we'll send you a little catalog and color sample chips, etc.

Thanks for asking about us, and just let us know if there's anything else we can answer!

If you're spending that much money, why not invest a few $$ in a plane ticket and check it out in person. And perhaps have a little fun as well.
