Good Questions: File Cabinets?

2005_1_3_question mark.jpgHello AT,

I am a creative writer (and poet), as well as an hoarder with too many years of papers and such to file away. I need a filing cabinet, any recommendations? Thank you.

Sincerely,
Grace

Filing cabinets are an awful necessity, and it is hard to make them fit into any room, even an office. We have four tips:

I have a filing cabinet that I use and have thought about painting it to fit in with the room a little better. Any thoughts on painting it? It's metal.

If you want vintage-- the old upright sturdy metal ones--a great source is the Two Jakes on Wythe (at Grand) in Williamsburg. They usually have a good stock and are reasonably priced. They will refinish them for you, or not. Because we wanted lateral cabinets for space reasons (which the Two Jakes don't carry as many of) we found a company on the web that refinishes old Steelcase ones and pallet ships them to your door. Unfortunately they went out of business (too cheap?), but maybe try googling or on e-bay for something similar. (I think this is how I found the company we used.)

Bisley filing cabinets are great. I have 2 with a glass top spanning them to make a desk. If you're buying in NYC, Sam Flax has a good selection and always has some floor models at a discount (discontinued colors, scratch and dent, etc.)

I bought my Bisley at Two Jakes. They always have some discounted as well. I love their furniture too.

If you want a Bisley cabinet, I suggest Two Jakes in Williamsburg (320 Wythe Ave, www.twojakes.com)

They have a much better selection than the Container Store and you're supporting a local NY business, not a giant box store. I bought one from them back in August, and it was worth the extra effort to head out there.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for the info., and sorry for the late reply. Actually, what is better -- metal, wood, etc. for file cabinets. And can you recommend lateral cabinets for prints, posters, etc. and/or a combo of both? Lastly, can you recommend me places to get this in New York and New Jersey?

grace, wood is always nicer, and i think what you are asking about is flat files, not lateral. I would go to Sam Flax or Pearl Paint for these. best, M

So I've been scavaging the Net trying to find a cheaper source. Anyone know of anybody else that carries this lateral file -wood - cabinet but has the more modern look to it. The C&B look nice + solid wood - but it's just not my taste.
