Good Questions: Find Holiday Swag and Advent Calendars?

12-14-swag.jpgHello AT,

I'm new to NYC. Does anyone have any suggestions for places to buy holiday swags in NYC? Not gifts, but decorations. I've also been looking for Advent calendars.

Your help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Sara

Dear Sara,

Although we are not typical swag shoppers, we recommend the numerous "Paper House/Party Stores" around town. There is one on the upper west side just above 72nd street, and one at Jefferson Market on Greenwich Ave. Also:

  • Lighting Plus for tons of lights
  • for fresh evergreen Egan Acres Tree Farm delivers to the city
  • An online advent calendar from our site designer, Leslie Harpold

We would also like to know where to find nice, modern advent calendars for the wall.

Last year, I saw nice Advent calendars (and holiday swag) at ABC Carpet. I tend to buy holiday stuff at ABC after the season at 60-80% off and squirrel it away for the following year. But I get great ideas there and just might treat myself if i see the perfect thing.

I keep the decor pretty restrained and just use a few nice things -- old silver stuff I get at flea markets, ribbon I find at the fabric stores in midtown, white candles.

OOOOooohhh!!!!!! Thank you guys! Everything on the internet in terms of chocolate calendars is sold out. I never would have thought of ABC and if there's nothing there I will definitely try Zion St. Mark's chruch.

Once I get a calendar I'll get a garland from Local Harvest for the smell and be all set!

Trader Joe's has great advent calendars for only $1. Today being Dec 1, I opened the first little door on one this morning.

From now through the 24th I'll be starting each day with a small piece of waxy chocolate. Mmmmmm!

Dear god, such a confusing use of the word "swag" in this context!!

I have a Trader Joes advent calendar, my daughter and I were trying to figure out which number to start with, 1 or 24. From the above comment, I opened number 1. Today being December 1. We were debating if we were using this as a count down, hence starting at 24 until you only had one day until Christmas or if we were using this as a calendar and starting on December 1 with number 1.

What was right? This advent calendar is in no particular order, the numbers are dispersed all over the place?

By the way, the chocolate is very good!!

Wouldn't an advent calendar be available at St. Patrick's or St. John the Divine?

I found a few advent calendars at Kate's Paperie (although they were like $28!) and the Park Slope Food Coop, of all places! If you're a member, the Coop also has some nice calendars of all varieties.

i'm not 100% sure about this because i've never been in the market for an advent calendar, but paul's comment sparked a memory. the Episcopal Church's main offices near the UN have a religious gift/book shop on the main floor. i'd bet dollars to donuts they carry very nice advent calendars. as would the General Theological Seminary's bookshop in Chelsea. other denominations probably have gift and bookshops and religious supply shops around the city, so you could easily pick your denomination of choice. there's also a more nondenominational happy feel good Jesus Loves You type religious bookstore in near times square somewhere...

i think you are supposed to start at 1, right?

You're definitely supposed to start with 1 on the advent calendars -- most have a bigger piece of chocolate or something special for the 24th, which i think of as kind of the "grand finale".

    What is swag???
    And what's an adevnt calendar???
    Why am I so confused?!?!?!

You start at 1, for December 1st, and end at 24, which is Christmas Eve....

Leslie Harpold's wonderful online calendar is stuck at 7. Sadly, she passed away a few days ago.

Isn't it a little late to be discussing where to pick up advent calendars? Just asking ...
