If you are in Washington, DC try Eastern Market in NE and the Georgetown Flea Market that recently moved to the Courthouse Metro stop (or the Clarendon stop? both stops are close to each other).

Marché aux Puces St-Ouen de Clignancourt in Paris perhaps? The grand-daddy of them all. Not a bad excuse to see Paris either. I offer tidings of good luck getting your purchases home however.

In Connecticut near Danbury. The Elephant's Trunk Country Flea Market. 2006 remaining dates November 26 * December 2006: 3,10,17. Check website for date updates due to snow.

In Massachusetts. About an hour from Boston and Hartford, CT. "The Brimfield Antiques Show is the largest outdoor antiques show in the world, with over 6,000 dealers. It is actually comprised of 23 fields with dealers from all over the world."

BRIMFIELD ANTIQUE SHOW DATES 2007
May 8-13 • July 10-15 • September 4-9

Elephant's Trunk is very hit and miss, more of a glorified garage sale with tons of junk and truckoads of new stuff and Canal Street fakes (this coming from a flea marketer and tag sailer). I'd go with the Paris recommendation!

I second ADM. I attend Brimfield each year (although I skipped it this year). Great flea! Best finds are in the Spring.

Oh and since I noticed someone mentioned Paris (although I'm guessing you're looking for something around NY, not over the pond) I guess I'll chime in and vote for Berlin.

If you're even in Germany - Berlin has a terrific flea and in the winter, you can drink hot spiced mulled wine while you shop. What's better than THAT?

I was just there last week. Click on my name to see some photos if you'd like.

i seem to remember some brilliant ones in jersey near the delaware river. does that ring a bell for anyone else?

Lisa- Do you mean the flea markets on Route 29 in Lambertville, NJ and then right across the bridge is New Hope, PA? Yes, definitely worth a trip outside of New York.

posted by AB on 2006-11-20 18:41:47

i think you're talking about the same ones, AB. i haven't been out there in over a decade. how can i figure out exactly where they are so a visit out that way doesn't devolve in a wild goose chase?

The Rose Bowl flea market in Pasadena. Has a ton of midcentury stuff, with credenzas and wall units particularly dirt-cheap (well under $1,000) - if you can haul them away. Serious shoppers do need to get there before 8 though.

I was restricted to things I could carry back on the plane, but did score eight more place settings and a full hostess set for my silver service (a 1950's pattern called Flair) for only $35 - WAAAY cheaper than eBay!

Stormville, NY has a massive flea market several times a year.

During the summer, the town of Coxsackie, NY has a town-wide tag sale the second Saturday in July, there's also a big antiques center with LOTS of vendors - open year round. The town is about 20 minutes from Hudson aka antiques mecca and the weekend destination for 74.3% of Chelsea (I made up that percentage!).

Hope that helps!

Speakingof Cligancourt...

I bought a beautiful crystal chandelier there (and toted it on the Metro back to my hotel!) and I need to have it re-wired and cleaned. Anyone want to make a referral? :)

PA has the best 'real' flea markets around.

Renningers in Kutztown and Adamstown are good starters. worth a car rental. while on your way, you will pass small road side flea markets, most outdoor markets will shut down last week of October. Renningers has a large indoor area.

Enjoy. pick up some Amish bakery for me.

Jean I do have a suggestion for the lamp. I warn you, they are NOT at all cheap.

They are quite good at what they do, but I warn you if you're looking for budget, they are not the people you want. For value and a great job, then yeah, use 'em.

Two years ago, I took a week and drove "The World's Longest Yard Sale." I found so many fantastic things at great prices and I had a ball doing it.

You may have seen it on HGTV...they do a special about it every year. It really is just as fun as it looks. I am definitely doing it again, with a couple changes.

Plus since flea markets start early and end early, I had evenings for sightseeing and enjoying myself. It was one of my favorite vacations ever.

There's a world outside of Manhattan?

posted by eddie on 2006-11-20 21:46:37

Since someone mentioned Hudson--any specific reco's there? Flea market or antique shops? Anything else in Columbia County? We're moving cross country soon, and Col. Cty. is our destination...

Then there's always Isle sur le Sorge in Southern France, a town chock-a-block full of antique stores and fleas on sundays.

is the Jersey Flea market on RT 29 the Englishtown Fleamarket?

The Englishtown Flea market has been open year round since the 20's.

The Albert Cyupmarkt in Amsterdam (The Netherlands, only 6 hours out of Manhattan, um - that way --> ) is a great open market.

But if you want specifically a big flea market, come back on April 30th when the ENTIRE country turns into a flea market for a day. It's called Queensday, in celebration of the monarch.

And as another poster has mentioned, the Germans have a great tradition of Christmas markets now, in most major cities, from now until the end of the Christmas season. Aachen, Berlin, Munich, Essen, Dresden - 40 or more, depending on which site you read it on.

Jim,

Great post - fantastic linkage there.
I'm actually enjoying these markets here in Germany this week. They're lovely. I highly suggest visiting here this time of year, it's splendid.

I haven't been to the Elephant's Trunk in 10 years so that's too bad that it's gone downhill. Glad PC gave you the skinny.

I used to go with my roommate who worked at an antique shop in New Canaan, and she'd had us there just before sunrise practically. There was some junk sale stuff like socks, cosmetics and Beanie Babies. However, I still have this great simple statue of a Buddhist monk, a perfectly weathered bright blue little desk, a funny pastel of a Boston terrier, a great Asian necklace with coral beads and some other "treasures."

Brimfield, however, is unbelievable. I got an old oak library table for $75 that I use as my desk.

SJV, I wanted to check out the Longest Yard Sale. It sounds great.

As far as other flea markets, I loved wandering London's markets.

Lisa an AB: the flea market you are reffereing to is the Golden Nugget, in NJ, just across the Delaware. It's hit and miss, but awfully fun. And New Hope is a great place to go to and explore anyway!
