Good Questions: Glass Door Cabinet for Display?

4-7-glass-cabinet.jpg
Hey Apartment Therapy, Can you help me with a request? I'm trying to find something very similar to this cupboard from tinekhome. It could be metal or wood — but definitely needs to be with glass. We need to store our dishes and something like this would be perfect, but I'm having a hard time finding anything with these dimensions and that has clean lines like this. I have seen something that could work from IKEA, but would prefer something that is vintage or...Thanks, Shashi

I'm a fan of the BERGSBO Cabinet from IKEA — and you can't beat the price! Who else has suggestions for Shashi?

Try the Rojo cabinet from Crate and Barrel. It is a multi-functional piece of furniture. It comes in a red color and also black. I think it's made in Italy and hand finished. I just bought one because I found it so appealing (even though it's not mid century or modern) and I am actually using it in my dining room for storage of white dinnerware, objects d'art and liquor (wine, mineral water, vodka) and a few books.

Try the ROJO cabinet from Crate and Barrel. I saw it recently in the store and loved it. It's not mid-century or modern (traditional actually) but it's the kind of furniture that has multiple functions and can work in a variety of rooms. Currently, I have mine in my dining room storing white dinnerware and other items. It comes in red and black and is made in Italy.

I was looking for something similar for my dining room, but was pretty restricted because I needed a very narrow piece. I found the perfect one on eBay. You can seach for sellers in your area, which cuts down on shipping. Be patient-- I was checking every few days for a month before I found mine!

hey Shashi, i'm glad you posted this "Good Question" cuz im looking for something like that too. I have a small studio so the direction of the opening glass doors matters to me. Instead of opening out/in doors, I found this gorgeous cabinets with SLIDING glass doors from Pottery Barn, "Garrett Glass Cabinet." It's bigger than what ur looking for and pricey. U can pick other colors than Red to Espresso Wood or Black. If Black, u could easily dry-brush with little white paint to make it look vintagey.

Boy, that might be hard -- I have NEVER seen one like that and I have looked at second hand furniture for many many years. You might be lucky on craigslist or eBay, or you might need to go custom (or customize something existing.) One possibility is to find a sturdy vintage bookshelf and have a carpenter make doors for you. Finding big clear panes of glass in ready-made doors might be a challenge, otherwise.
Good luck!

I've been looking for this very same thing. At CB, they have one in red (I want one with legs, too) and they won't paint it grey. I'm not confident enough in my skills to buy an expensive piece and then screw up the painting job on it.

I had a picture of a glass-door cabinet from the Restoration Hardware catalog that I took to a guy that does woodworking. He made a beautiful cabinet for me that I then painted a lovely dark, mossy green, which looks great in my dining room. It wasn't expensive to have made (about 1/2 the $995 RH price) took about 2 weeks, and I love it.

You could try talking to some wood guys and see what kind of prices you get.

Thanks everyone, I ended up finding something on craigslist, more mission style and it's white dark wood. Planning on sanding it down and changing it up a bit, to make a little less heavy. It's challenging to find decent furniture without spending a fortune, so I appreciate your help!
