Hello AT,
I have a color problem. I am moving to a mid-century house (ok, really it's a post war bungalow) from my apartment. Now that I will have my own place, I can actually paint my walls! My microfiber couches are a very cool color of gold with a hint of green...

It is very similar to Glidden Paint's 2006 Color of the Year, Golden Kiwi. With such an interesting color of couch, what color should I go with for my walls? I also will be recovering this mid-century chair, to coordinate with my couch, but again, I am a color and pattern novice. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Sincerely, Carrie
Dear Carrie,
We love both pieces of furniture and also like the crazy blue chair. We'd keep it (if it's in good condition). MidC style is a bit funky and mixes of cool and warm colors like this work nicely.
If you want to make it a bit more contemporary, we'd take a look at Deborah Needleman's apartment in New York Magazine. She has a nice vintagey feeling which is also very contemporary. Warm greys and beiges are the key here.
Specifically, for your walls, we would look at Benjamin Moore's Off White collection:
Cedar Key OC16 (a fave)
Fog Mist OC31
Balboa Mist OC27
You could also look at Siberian Snowflake which was featured in this post:

Anyone else??
That carpet appears to at least mean to be grey, but it's kind of purple-ish in the photo, so if you wanted to acknowledge it on some walls, you might try:
Sidewalk Gray 2133-60
And if you wanted at least one warmer wall, you could pick something up from the darker tones of the nap of your fabric, which look (to me) something like:
Spring Dust 2150-40
That would give you something for things to pop off of. That bright blue would feel kind of comfortable in front of either one of those, I think, while popping pretty well.

Carrie -
I just played around and made you a little color scheme. Hope it helps.

Check out these Devine colors. There are some rich neutrals that would go well.

These are good too. The "Filbert" here is a lighter neutral but still plenty rich and looks great with that color of sofa.

I think the couch and chair would look gorgeous against a chocolate brown wall.

Martha Stewart's paint line at K-mart -- which alas has been discontinued -- had some great mid-century suggestions. I haven;t seen her new line at Loews, but if it's out yet, I'm sure there will be some great ideas.
I agree with Maxwell's suggestions above. And feel free to take a look at the palette in my apt.

Mid-C Frank,
What color green is that in the room next to your living room? I'm trying to find the right muted green for my new apartment.

cbinnyc -
If you like muted green check out Devine "Olive". It's a muted green.
I painted my den with it. It goes great with dark wood. It almost looks grey in the right light, it's a subtle effect, it doesn't "shout" green like some colors.

If you want a darker tone, try "Moss" - it was too dark for me though.

i was thinking teal, too, MamaChilanga! but something unsaturated, like Devine Storm or Devine Rain:

or something a little more blue, like this:

i'm planning a wedding with a mid-century "flair" and that greyed-out teal keeps popping up. such a lovely color and looks great with nearly everything it's next to.

Birdy - I was going to suggest chocolate brown too!
and see Patrick - two people suggested teal with the lime green - so its not just me!!
