Good Questions: Good Mid-C Restorer?

12-15-eames.jpgHello AT,

Any clue on a good restorer of Eames era furniture? I inherited a sad looking Eames reproduction direly in need of restoration.

Thanks, Ntainu

Dear Ntainu,

We think that you needn't be style specific when it comes to furniture restoration. Restoration is restoration. With this in mind, we would go directly to these following two sources and speak to them:
Elizabeth Hargraves: Antique Surface Restoration
The Furniture Joint: Renew Yourself

Anyone else??

I have a friend who works for knoll and I am pretty sure I remember someone from there saying that the company had an upholsterer who did all of there work somewhere in Queens..... couldn't hurt to put in a call to Knoll NYC.... they're in the meat packing district across the street from Chelsea Market.

There was an article in the NYTimes a couple years back called "New Hope for Shabby Modernist Heirlooms" (July 3, 2003). It was written by a woman (Andrea Tuppin) who had a 30+-year-old Eames lounge chair that was in desperate need of restoration. She looks into various options (including replacement), but eventually contacts Sol Ovida at Prestige Furniture & Design Group (718-721-2200), off Northern Blvd. in Woodside Queens (maybe this is who Kristian is thinking of).

The article weighs the various pros and cons of, and options for, restoration. I can email it to you if you'd like. I saved it because, well, I'm the owner of a shabby modernist heirloom, and no, actually I haven't gotten around to doing anything about it yet, but that's another story....

I would love a copy of that article too, nora! There are pieces I have that look really shabby but I've been afraid to touch them. Please send it to varsha624@sbcglobal.net. Thanks!

I'm in the middle of a basic restoration of a eames lounge knock-off I got earlier this year. I found a leather supplier on ebay and received basically an entire cow. Using the old leather as the pattern, I've cut all new pieces and reupholstered most of it. I need to repad the butt and lower back pieces still, so I've held off finishing those. once the cushions are complete, I plan to strip the wood, stain it, and varnish it.

I have an original Egg Chair that I purchased in the 1960s.
It needs new foam padding and fabric cover.
Would like to sell it, either restored or as-is.
Any suggestions?

Knoll Studio in NYC does indeed use Sol Ovida at PRESTIGE FURNITURE & DESIGN GROUP in Woodside Queens to do their showroom upholsery. When I called them, that's who they directed me to. (718) 721-2200.
