Hello AT,
I have a problem. We are leaving New York and moving down to North Carolina and I want to find a good moving company who will take all our things down. I have seen on your site some good companies, such as Brownstone Brothers (which is excellent), but they don't handle the whole move themselves. They connect to a national carrier.
Do you know anyone in the NYC area who will handle a move to the Carolina's by themselves?
Thanks, David
David, that is a very interesting question and you are absolutely right, most of the good local movers are just that, local movers. When we moved some stuff over from California in the spring we basically dealt with two companies. We recommend calling these guys:
Moishes' Moving Systems - they have expanded to long distance moving
Manhattan Mini Storage - These guys are big and handle both storage and moving Meyer's Moving & Storage - We think they do the local and Mayflower does the long distance, but call.
You may want to check out citimove.com - it is a website where you can post your move for free and different moving companies offer bids. I posted my moving job there and not only got someone at a very reasonable rate, but found a whole network of reliable and rated movers. The guy who helped me move was Ray, and his service was RVS - I think he is great for local moves. Not sure about long-distance.
I love, love, love Movers, Not Shakers. They are very reasonably priced, and are extremely diligent and careful. They moved me (albeit within the city) and--gasp!--actually showed up 15 minutes early. They also just moved my friend down to DC, and quoted her the best price. She said they were wonderful and careful. (She also said they were the only movers to show up on time to give her an estimate) Check them out!
Hi-
When I made my long distance move, I interviewed several companies from the major movers to the smaller ones to compare quotes. I ended up going with Bekins, which even to my surprise, came in lower than Meyer's did (who I'd used before) and some of the other big ones. Moving costs are all based on weight, regardless of what anyone tells you because they are regulated by interstate transportation laws. ALso, be aware of "shuttle" expenses. The big trucks can't come in to NYC so they hire a smaller company to pick your stuff up and then they load it again onto the bigger trucks. This is an added expense and can be very high. It all depends on how much stuff you have and whether you will need a giant moving van or not. Some of the smaller companies I spoke to were kind of flaky with their estimates. They insisted that their estimates were based on cubic feet which made their estimates lower, but in the end they cannot be, again because of insterstate commerce regulations. So this made me nervous. I chose to have a "cannot exceed" estimate. This way you are less likely to be hit up with extra suprise charges at the back end. Good luck. Moving can be so stressful.
Not sure why you are steering clear, or leery of, a national carrier. On a state-to-stae move, I think a national vanline would indeed get a better or competitive price, and you'd have the reputation of a national brand to fall back on.
And I think the best place to research moving companies is still the Yellow Pages. Or moving.com.
I just moved, so I was doing a lot of research on finding movers. Go to movingscam.com...they've got great tips about not getting scammed and the message board has discussions about good moving experiences all the time. One of the things they said was that it's bad to find your mover online--which was how I started out. They said to go to the yellow pages to start your search...good luck!
I used Flat Rate for my cross country move last year. They weren't the cheapest, but I felt fairly secure with them and I have no problems.
On what basis are you recommending Moishe's? They were responsible for the worst move I ever had, including something "disappearing" when they weren't happy with the decent tip, and the "insurance" I paid for not covering that. In sum, I found them to be sullen crooks.
On the other hand, my most recent move was with B Flat (found them on craigslist). Really nice guys, worked their asses off, would completely recommend them.
