Good Questions: Good Old Fashioned Stationary?

2004_7_question mark.jpgDear AT,

As e-mails become ubiquitous, I'm mourning the vanishing of a treasured species: the hand-written note. That's why I want to give some stationary or card-stock as a holiday present. And who else to consult for advice on the best product(s), but you? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Johnny

You have come to the right place. Our top picks:

  • Simple: Crown Mill Luxury Stationary
  • Fancy: Borghese gift Boxed Stationary Set
  • Fun: Smythson of Bond Street Bespoke Stationary

All of these can come in stationary or notecard form and are available online. (Thanks, Johnny!) MGR

If you want to do personalized, www.iomoi.com has a fun section where you pick an icon and a font for the name. Ours came out very nicely. It is better for females but there are some masculine choices.

(I'll admit that I haven't visited this shop yet but it sounds so wonderful)

Yes, the shop at the South Street Seaport museum is indeed wonderful. The merchandise AND the atmosphere. They specialize in letterpress printing. As letterpress printing is such a labor of love (not to mention handmade, original, classy, etc.), it's an amazing idea for gift giving. (No, I don't work there, though I woudn't mind...)

Thermography is much cheaper than engraving if you want to have your name and address put onto stationary. Crane's have a huge selection of papers, fonts and motifs. You can do it through Kates Paperie or go to the Cranes shop, 59 W. 49th St., at Rockefeller Plaza.

For the best combination of cool and traditional, check out a line called "Arturo". It's made in a 600 year old paper mill in Italy and comes in regular and folded cards (including the trendy squares) in something like 8 colors. The cards all have deckled edges, which I like a lot. I bought mine at paper.com, but I most art stores have it too (NY Central, Dick Blick, etc.)

This is also an opportunity to throw some work the way of your friendly neighborhood graphic designer, and end up with something truly unique.
