Good Questions: Good, Small Kitchen Cart?

10-11-cart.jpgHello AT,

Does anyone know where I might be able to find a small, cute kitchen cart?

I've just moved into a new place and need a very small cart because I have no drawers or counter--and not a lot of other space. I've only been able to find carts around this size (see pic). I'm looking for something more on the order of 20" by 13", preferably also with cabinets below and a butcher-block top. And also a bit more modern and stylie. Ikea, Home Depot, and Gothic seem to only have quite large versions (by NYC standards) , like this one from Target. Thoughts?

Thanks! -Valerie

10-11-metro.jpgDear Valerie,

This is a tough niche and our best suggestion to date is to go for Metro Shelving with a butcher block top. You can find it at The Container Store and the outside dimensions are 21x27 - a bit bigger than you hoped perhaps, but pretty darn good. It is also so light in frame that it takes up very little visual space.

Anyone else??

stacksandstacks.com has lots of carts - at reasonable prices. I ordered mine from there and have been very happy with it.
this one is close to your dimensions, but is open on the bottom...

I found something this size, but with a formica top, at a vintage store. I think it was originally a bar cart. Maybe you could look for bar carts instead of kitchen carts.
Good luck!

Bed Bath and Beyond carries one similar to the picture above which I purchased. It has a drawer, a fold out cutting board, a built in knife block and paper towel holder and a stainless steel top. It fits very well into my tiny studio and the wheels mean I can move it around if need be. It was under $200 (I don't remember exactly how much and I had a coupon) and easy to put together. They have a few options on their website.

I actually ordered a block online from JCPenney a few years back... they have a good selection and great prices. (Granite-topped with a wine rack for $120, and it's held up well.) Not sure if they have the size you're looking for, but give it a shot.

I found something that looks a good deal like the cart pictured above (chrome shelving and a butcher block-ish top) at Target, where the dimensions were in the 17"w x 14" deep and about 30" high range, unfortunately can't find a link to it.

IKEA has some sweet carts. I bought the stainless one, which comes with a little chopping board, but bought a 3" thick chopping board (from IKEA, though I dont hink they sell that anymore) and it looks SWEET. ANd 99 bucks.

I got a good one for $100 at Surprise Suprise in the East Village. They were hit-or-miss, but I got lucky.
Also, Kmart surprisingly had some good options, with bakers racks

I just saw in a magazine this morning that Moma sells one made by Muji: http://www.momastore.org/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10451&storeId=10001&productId=24417&src=shop&promoCode=
It's pretty expensive, though, at $600.

There's a small(ish) one at homedecorators.com -- they have a number of different options. Click on my name to see the best one (which I hope could be painted or stained).

I bought the same cart as Liz from Target -- and since is was only $30, I wne back for a second and used the shelves from the second to add extra layers for the first (and used butcher block top on top of old painted wooden counters).

I can't find a link either, but try this one:

http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-9/qid=1160585933/ref=sr_1_9/602-4363096-3754242?%5Fencoding=UTF8&asin=B000BC2D6Q

or here's and even small one:

http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-6/qid=1160586267/ref=sr_1_6/602-4363096-3754242?%5Fencoding=UTF8&asin=B0007T30ZQ

If this had been available last year, I would have bought this one -- the pull out shelves (in this case, baskets) are really handy in a small kitchen.

Look around the Target website -- they have a lot of carts. Another inexpensive source of kitchen carts is Kmart -- they have a bunch under Martha Stewart's label -- much cheaper than Metro Shelving. Another place to try is Surprise Surprise on 3rd below 14th (12th maybe?) -- good selection of inexpensive carts.

you guys rock. thanks for all the great ideas. not sure which one i'll choose yet (of course the muji is loveliest, but that's arm-chair money!), but this is really helpful so far. -v.

If you go to Japan to pick up the Muji cart, you can get it for 36750 yen, which is only about $300. http://store.muji.net/user/ItemDetail/detail?svid=8&sc=S02506&sp=muji&prd=4548076617433&index=2&_from=/ListProducts/list
But when you factor in the airfare...
