Hello AT,
I am having trouble finding someone to redo my old clawfoot tub. I called George Taylor, but his comment was that there is no such thing as refinishing and that I should just buy a new one. This is not a viable alternative!
Anyone know a good tub refinisher?
Thanks, Mary
As far as we know, all refinishing is "re-glazing," but there are varying qualities. We found this intense thread over at Van Dykes that is a little helpful in filling in the back story, meanwhile the best thing we know is to ship your tub to a re-glazer/re-finisher and have then do it in their shop. Here are a few sources and here is Reglazers.com.
The deal with reglazing is that after your porcelain is prepped they apply a highly toxic polymer glaze to the tub which takes a day or two to set (longer to off-gas). The glaze looks great and works well as long as you don't use harsh cleaners (ie. comet) or chip at it with hard objects. (Thanks, Mary!) MGR

Hello, here is my email adress sitaparsad@yahoo.com send me an email and we can talk about your dilema. My husband and I are reglazers and very reasonable.
The women in the apartment below us re-glazed her tub. The fumes were so noxious that we had to spend the night at a friend's house. If you do do your tub, it is wise (and kind) to let your neighbors know.

Wasn't this covered already?

By the way, I used these guys, and was happy with the job, but be aware that your tub will look much different. The finish is very (or should I say "too") shiny. It looks like a tub that has been coated, not like a mint condition old tub. So if you just want to make it look better, go for it. If you're looking to do an historically accurate restoration of an antique bathroom, then you may not be pleased.
Think I would go with the suggestion from George Taylor,
they are probably the most knowledge people in the city
when it comes to anything for the bath. My understanding is
refinishing only last for a few years and is not very
durable. Good luck.

My ex-roommate had her clawfoot tub refinished at least four years ago, and as far as I know it's still looking great, even with at least three people taking a shower or bath a day and my on-going Manic Panic habit... She was super clean and the sort of person who describes themselves as anal, so you may also have to do some extra scrubbing to keep your tub in good shape.
Ive had tubs refinished and they lasted for yrs.I think refinishing is a great alternative to replacment.I know many building owners as well and they all use this service with great results.follow care instructions and it will last for yrs.I think its only the pplwho neglect this who have bad experiences.u only have yourself to blame. to all reputable refinishers keep up the great work.
I want to paint the inside of my bath tub and I cannot afford to get someone to do it. They are charging $200.
What can I buy from home depot or Lowe to paint it?
Can I use exterior enamel paint?
Please help I can until 07/11/06 to have it done
