Hello AT,
I really like this Eiffel Tower calligram by Guillaume Apollinaire. Does anyone know where I could find a print of it? I googled it, but could only find one or two other prints by him (not this one), and eBay only turned up books, no prints. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks! Sara

Based on the web address below, I would give the Visual Media Center at Columbia's Department of Art History a try.

Interesting side-note, Appolinaire was once arrested for theft of the Mona Lisa. So, in keeping with today's theme, a little copyright infringement in this case might be poetic.
Although I'm sure Doug's reference to copyright infringement was in jest, it's really unlikely the image is protected by copyright at this point anyway (as Appolinaire died in 1918). Which means that the idea Doug seemed to be implying -- making your own print of the image -- is unlikely to result in cease and desist letters from Appolinaire (although you never know).
The calligram appears to have been published in a collection of poetry titled Calligrames. There are many copies of it available for purchase. Go to http://www.alibris.com and do a title search.
The original seems to be at the Musee d'Orsay. http://www.musee-orsay.fr
abe books also has several editions of it:

I copy art in various ways all the time. As long as it is for my own personal use and not for any kind of profit I don't see how it is hurting anybody. Find the highest quality image you can of it online or in a book to have it scanned and print it out in the size you want.
I suppose recreating the whole image using the Times's font would be completely out of the question....
; )
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I suppose I will have to just track down the book and make a high-res scan...
I say recreate it yourself directly on a wall - get some black paint, some stencils and mess up the letters a bit after so they don't look too stenciled. Or just write (paint) it out freehand for the same handwritten feel.
I like Calla's idea for a stencil. You could also update it and make it about, say, NYC in the shape of the Empire State Building, or update the anti-German feelings (so last season!) to reflect your favorite xenophobia.
