apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Good Questions: He *hearts* Dr. Melfi's Chair...

5-16--melfi.jpgHello AT,

I'm a huge Sopranos fan and really dig Dr. Melfi's chair on the show. This is the best picture I could find of it; any idea where it (or something similar) is available? BTW -- Cropping out Tony from the picture was necessary to avoid chair confusion. Mr. Gandolfini, if you happen to read AT, I hope you're not upset. *Gulp*

Thanks! Brandon S

I see this chair on eBay quite often -- try a search under "Eames" or "Mid-century"

I *heart* Dr. Melfi's shoes!

There is a Russell Wright design for Heywood-Wakefield that is pretty close to this one.

Frank, you're kidding, right?

In my experience, "Eames" on eBay applies strictly to objects/furniture that:
1) contain wood, plywood, metal, plastic, fabric and/or some combination of those materials,
2) have somewhat clean and/or funky lines, and
3) were made sometime between 1900 and today.

Honestly, I have to constantly restrain myself from firing off e-mails to eBayers and Craigslisters scolding them for misuse of Art Deco, Art Nouveau, "Eames Era," etc. At that's before we get to the spelling errors and misplaced apostrophes. Grr.

Only on Apartment Therapy would a bunch of guys get all hot about Dr. Melfi's CHAIR and totally ignore Dr. Melfi!

I LOVE IT!

Scott, the Sculptura line HW?

I haven't found the chair yet.

AJ --- cool your heels. Was just offering a helpful suggestion.

I, too, am often appalled by classifications et al on eBay, and don;t get me started on spelling. However, it is still a great resource.

I believe the style is similar to a Hans Wegner chair. I've seen several on Ebay of this style usually from seller Design.Addict. Someone over there might also be able to help.

AT Chicago had a post on a store called Springfield that has mostly Heywood Wakefield but some other related stuff too. Seems like I saw some similar chairs when I cruised the site quickly.

Andree...I'm not finding a visual yet to share. I think Wright only did a couple groups for HW.

It is a much-imitated design although whenever I've seen one I haven't had Wright's catalogue raisonne with me to compare. (Kidding...don't have one but wish I did).

Lesley, I didn't see a chair like the one in the picture at the top, but it's YOUR fault that I found this chair that I think is beautiful!

Scott, was it like the ones in the links I posted, with the same legs?

By the way, I just browsed 11 pages at eBay in the Antiques, Post-1900, Mid-Century Modern, Chairs. The chair wasn't in there, and nothing that I would consider to be similar enough worthy of posting.

I have, however, had more than my MDR (minimum daily requirement) of fiberglass, plastic, metal mesh, and plywood.

Ok, it's not exactly the same thing, but similar - the La-Z-Boy Lina Chair (Todd Oldham)

Hi Frank,

ooh, tone transmits poorly in print sometimes. It drives me nuts that certain labels are misused left & right, and most folks on AT have a love or at least awareness of MCM so I figured everyone could relate.

My intention was to amuse (thus my "Eames Era" definition) *not* to offend. Hm.
So much for a career writing a humor column. Smileys. That's it, I should've added smileys...

(The topic of Eames classification aside)

I have seen chairs similar to the one pictured show up on Ebay on occasion (chairs with similar sharp angle to the arms, upholstered back and seat, wood legs)

The latest that I came across is below
http://cgi.ebay.com/Mid-Century-Danish-Modern-2-Lounge-Chairs-Eames-Era_W0QQitemZ6630176674QQcategoryZ63568QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Otherwise, the Ebay category that I would search under would be
Antiques > Furniture > Style field “Mid-Century Modern” + Product field “Chair”

Good luck.

Jessica, that's a good looking chair!

Andree...it is more like Jessica's than yours.

posted by Scott on 2006-05-17 02:42:44

Thanks for all the responses. I've definitely found some inspiration and more conviction that I want to include some "found" pieces in the living room.

posted by brandon on 2006-05-17 09:30:23

It also looks like some Royere chairs that I've seen. (The sharp "zig" - or "zag" -- of the arms, especially.) Unfortunately, Royere stuff costs gobs.

Scott:

WHAT?

You say: "Andree...it is more like Jessica's than yours."

What does that mean? I said the chair Jessica posted was a good looking chair.

I asked you if the line you were thinking of at HW was the Sculptura.

I said I found a chair that *I* liked from Lesley's post.

So I'm not making the connection, or any sense out of "Andree...it is more like Jessica's than yours."

Any time I see my name on this site I immediately get defensive. I figure an attack is coming. It makes me cringe. So, can you tell me what you meant by what you said before I walk around in a snit for the rest of the day?

posted by Andree on 2006-05-17 14:23:52

I just saw a close to exact replica of this chair on the corner of Bowery and 3rd St and I think the shop was called "white on white" and they have a website with the same name...good luck!
best regards heh heh heh,

Second cringe of the day, duly noted, thanks to yet another non-fan.

OK, I've become obsessed with this. The Set Decorator for "The Sopranos" is a woman named Jessica Lanier. If anyone out there has a subscription to IMDBPro.com (I don't), you might be able to get her contact information, and see if she can give you any info about the chair.

posted by Mary on 2006-05-17 18:45:28

Andree, honey, take it easy.

I think Scott just meant that the chair Jessica found was closer to the chair he covets than the chair(s) that you found. I don't think that's any reflection on anyone's taste, just an attempt at narrowing the field of chair options.

It's a big site, and we can't all be each other's fans, it's true, but when in doubt, apply copious amounts of slack. I know I've accidentally offended people when it was the farthest thing from my intentions... and then been stunned at how it was taken. For every comment that makes you defensive, there's been plenty of positive feedback for your suggestions. Remember, you're among tons of new yorkers here: they have a reputation for requiring thicker skins.

Now we need someone to find Ms. Lanier before we all go nuts!

Of course the chair I found wasn't close to the chair in the picture. It was JUST A CHAIR THAT I LIKED. It looked NOTHING like the chair in the picture! LOL! At all. The chair I found was all curvy and the seat/back looked like it was just floating between two curvy noodles.

Anyway, here's the chair that is wanted:
http://stores.ebay.com/SkyPods

Chair and sofa. With arms. There's also similar style without arms. Enjoy!

posted by Andree on 2006-05-17 22:38:34

Uh, darn this for not having an edit.

The arms aren't as long as the one in the picture at the top of this page. But otherwise, real close.

posted by Andree on 2006-05-17 22:43:44

Scott! I think I finally got what you said. Were you replying to my question on the furniture you'd seen before? Sorry, I'm a total idiot. Everything ends up having 15 different meanings, and I pick the one most likely to harm me. Hah!

After looking at 32 pages of CHAIRS on eBay, and finding that one above that is the closest match (they even mention the Sopranos in the ad), I ended up having a dream about the dang chair last night.

In which the set designer said that they used Photoshop to alter the appearance of the chair so the arms were pointier.

And I didn't find the above chair in the chairs section. It wasn't there. The thing that was listed in "chairs" was the picture of the armless sofa and chair, but I thought that the legs looked about right and hoped in the description they'd mention a brand name. In the description they had a little picture of the pointy arm chair. Woo hoo. And they had a store so I went there, and that's where the chair and sofa were hiding. The sets are in the sofa category on eBay, and I would never have browsed the sofas to find a chair.
