Hello AT,
My friend and I just converted the living room of a one bedroom apartment into a 2 bedroom by putting up a wall down the center of the living room. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to put up a full wall since in case of a fire, the sprinkler would not be able to reach the other room.
The wall only goes up to 7 feet, the ceiling is about 9 feet.
Can anyone suggest a way to put something temporary up in this space so that I can have some privacy? Is there a type of soundproof curtain that can be put on a track along the ceiling? Thanks, Jill

I'd think that lucite panels would also violate the fire code. They would block the sprinkler just as much as a wall.
I wonder if plants might have a sound absorbing quality . . .
You can't finish the TOP of the wall, but what about putting a false ceiling over one of the rooms? You could stretch a translucent fabric over the room at 7'-0"...use the following 2'-0" to make a light box with incandescent or fluorescent lights above the ceiling...one room becomes a bit more "intimate", albeit with a fantastic ceiling.
Any code consultants out there?
cork paneling or tiles make tremendous sound proofing, not to mention an infinite bulletin board. Or they can be stained, painted; come in fabulous swirly or cool linear designs.
I like the low-hanging ceiling idea. You can use fishnet or some sort of perforated fabric that will let in the dousing waters. Or a fabric/paper that disintegrates upon impact with water.
you could think along the lines of thick transparent plastic strips hung vertically with a slight overlap. This could be put up like a curtain which can be drawn aside when you dont need it. However I think plants are the most aesthetic option. Try using a strong vertical plant like mother-in-laws-tongue....(dont know the latin name....it is almost architectural in appearance and a very forgiving plant when you forget to water it. Otherwise just turn the sprinklers on from time to time.....(Just kidding!!!)
have you considered some simple wooden bookshelves? you could get two rows in two feet.
I would use some sort of slatted screen made of bamboo or some other such natural material. A few plants or colorful vases/artwork placed infront would look great and make a great display shelf.
