Good Questions: How Do I Copy Nine Zero Affordably?

12-14-ninefinal.jpg
Hello AT,

I recently stayed at the NineZero Hotel in Boston. Great room design that I'd really like to replicate in my apartment. The hotel actually sells its furnishings on line, but many of the items are real budget busters. Any thoughts on recreating this look for less.

Thanks, Rob

Dear Rob, this is nice stuff and we haven't seen this exact style anywhere else. We would love to know the designer, Wilson & Associates, behind it. We're going to list a few shops that do something similar and hope that our readers have other good ideas.

Wow, a gorgeous place, and LOVE the furnishings (I am currently in lust with all things modern-wing-chair).

I think you could hit a similar look for a *slightly* more reasonable tally with a carfeully culled collection of stuff from Mitchell Gold (try the great collections of MG at ABC Carpet or New Hope's Blue Raccoon), Room & Board, Storehouse and even Crate & Barrel. But you'll probably need to mix and match, and go into their non-standard fabric swatches to get this more collected but homogeneous (in a good way) look.

The other key elements seem to be lack of clutter, really clean lines but sculptural upholstered pieces, dark woods, and nice variety of texture, visual and otherwise. Also, if in Boston itself, you might try Celeste Cooper's Repertoire (also here in NYC), although price will be an issue there too.

And maybe Baker and/or Bloomingdale's... this stuff feels *vaguely* Barbara Barry-ish.

Rob--

Another idea-- the interiors look very much like the "vibe" of many of the interiors in Canadian House & Home. So, track down a copy and see what Canadian vendors might offer similar styles, or just see how our stylish neighbors to the North are decorating in a style you might respond to.

ps-- Where are you located?

Is Repertoire still here? For some reason I thought they were having problems and closed. But I could be wrong. I love Celeste Cooper. We met a couple of times and had great conversations. I love her style.

I recently made a furniture-buying trip to North Carolina, and I can vouch for the deals there. I visited the Mitchell Gold outlet in Hickory, and while I didn't buy anything (I was in the market for a dining room table, and there were very few), they did have a wide assortment of contemporary upholstered sofas and chairs at deeply-discounted prices. I also visited the Hickory Furniture Mart, where I eventually bought my table (at less than half the original price). I am particularly fond of Hickory Chair's Thomas O'Brien line, and I saw several pieces at the Henredon Factory Outlet in the Mart, and although the prices were not inexpensive, they did represent a savings of 50-70%. It's important to inspect the pieces carefully, as many have surface defects like rubs. or chipped paint. The cost of a plane ticket to North Carolina is usually quite reasonable (mine was $200, and I wound up earning a $200 travel voucher by taking a later flight), and shipping from NC costs about $60-65 per 100 pounds of goods. Depending on what you need and where you live, this can be a viable option. Alternatively, you might just call the Mitchell Gold outlet and ask them to take a few digital photos of the showroom. If a particular piece catches your eye, you can then ask them to take detailed photos of it. Be sure to ask about damaged. I wound up buying a table I had seen after I got home, and the entire transaction was seamless.

Also check out C-Mart (cmartdiscount.com), a furniture discounter outside Baltimore. They often get whole collections from the International Home Furnishings Fair, held twice yearly in High Point, NC. While they do not offer phone sales, their prices are quite reasonable for the quality of the furnishings. They update their digital pictures frequently.

Ebay is a great source for coffee tables, end tables, and lamps. I have seen lamps very like the ones pictured, and you should be able to find coffee and end tables like those pictured. These pieces look vaguely Deco, but I would simply search for "end table," or "coffee table" in the antiques category and in the Home and Garden/furniture category. Although it will take you some time to scan all the listings, persistence pays off. I would search for a "Deco table," because I doubt that this will turn up much other than auction listing. I hate to pay the buyer's premium auction houses charge (often 18%).

For the flowers, check out flyboynaturals.com. In my own attempt to recreate the hotel 60Thompson at home, I bought apple green freeze-dried hydrangeas from the site, and the staff was wonderfully helpful. I worked with Heidi to get a mostly green selection. They look as fresh as natural flowers but will last much longer. You could probably recreate the look of the two arrangements for less than $100, and, if kept out of direct sunlight, you can expect them to last a very long time.

Best of luck.

I failed to mention that C-Mart is bringing in John Charles Designs' High Point Furniture Fair showroom in two weeks. The line is contemporary, clean-lined, and the wood stains are almost exclusively dark.
If you visit CMart, talk to Bob King about shipping. The store will not arrange shipping for you, but I believe they work with Overnite shipping, a division of UPS.

I must just correct a couple of typos: I should have written, "Be sure to ask about damage." Many pieces in the outlets do have some minor damage.

Secondly, I meant to advise you not to search for "Deco table," because I don't think this will bring up what you are looking for.

You must arrange your own shipping with Cmart, but if you call a company like Overnite, they will pick up the merchandise at the store and deliver it to your home.

I was looking for a sideboard many years ago and couldn't find anything that fit my budget. I saw exactly what I wanted in Bloomingdale's but even when it went on sale I couldn't afford it. So I got in touch with a store in NC (Black's Furniture) and got the same exact piece for half the cost. The delivery charge was really low (although I can't remember what it was since it was so long ago.)

So if you find a piece here, I'd recommend doing a bit of online research to see who carries it in NC and order it from them. The savings are great.

Talking of Eboniste, I just found out I won their lacquer tea table (see link) from a Style Maven sweepstake. I've never won anything before so I've extremely chuffed!

That should say: I'm extremely chuffed!

Hey Reef, CONGRATULATIONS! I've never won anything before either so I know how you must feel. It's a cute table. Know where you're going to put it?

Thanks Anne,

I can't actually remember what color it is but I think it may be bright orange, so perhaps next to my white Eames rocker in my living room? I've been meaning to by a side table so this will be perfect. The rest of my living room is pretty warm (dark woods, caramel ultrasuede sectional) and I'm trying to be a little more gutsy and a lot more colorful!

Reef,

You get to choose any color you like, not just the orange shown in the original contest page. Just let us know which color you'd like to have next to that Eames rocker and we'll get it to you straight away!

It's really a great table, congratulations!

Hi,

I'm new here and have a question. I'm planning to checkout c-mart tomorrow to see the John Charles collection. The website says its discounted 65%. Is this a really high end collection? I'm looking for a sofa and 2 matching chairs. How much should i expect to pay? Would appreciate a speedy reply and i need to leave early AM as it's quite a ways from my home.
