Good Questions: How to Faux a Spiral Staircase?

2005_1_3_question mark.jpgHello AT,
I'm in charge of ridding Rhode Island of the lighthouse and anchor motif. I have a black wrought iron spiral staircase. Any ideas on how to faux it w/o fauxing it up. Thinking a stainless or aluminum look. Thanks.

Looks like Rhode Island is in for a whooping. It could be a lot of work, but the nicest thing we can think of would be to strip it down to the metal and then cover it with a clear lacquer. Barring that, you could explore the cool radiator paints that come in glossy silver and are TOUGH.

Depending on your decor, a really shiny, warm bone white could be killer as well. In general, we are saying keep it uniform and less is more. Send us pics! MGR

Another thought - a friend just cut thick leather pads for the tops of the treads on his metal staircase. Nice. This is another place to detail....

Wow! Will try this radiator paint in white. Does anyone know what kind of paint would be good for a metal window gate? Mine keeps rusting.

For painting metal all the books I've read (Tauton Press has a really nice one) recommend a "direct to metal" primer on a cleaned metal surface before you paint. Sherwin-Williams has some good info, I think I'm posting the URL with this post.

As a southerner, I must say that the correct spelling of the word is "whuppin'". *smile*

Jim and others... I believe this is the book that trillium referenced -

www.taunton.com/store/pages/070292.asp

Taunton has published many valuable household resources and are well-know for impeccable research. If, one day, Taunton printed that the sky is yellow I would probably believe them. They know their stuff.

AT and company,
Thanks for the great ideas!
I'm a southerner as well (GO DAWGS!) and 'whuppin' is correct. I'll forward pictures after the project.
AT rocks!
