Good Questions: How To Remove Scratches From My Tub?

35927417_da81dc7b13.jpgHello AT,

My bathtub is scratched (from cleaning my window screens in the tub) and I was wondering if there was a way to fix it. i.e someone who could come in an spray a layer of special paint, etc?

Thanks, Keely

Dear Keely,
Depending on what kind of tub you have, you can fix the scratches in different ways. First, you might want to see if the scratches are just aluminum marks ON the surface of your tub. These might go away with bleach and a stiff metal scrubbee. We found this link for cleaning and repairing acrylic tubs, and this link for repairing a fiberglass tub. If you want to resurface your whole tub, that is another thing, but not hard to do. Here is a thread on tub refinishers. Anyone else?

Ooh I'm having a similar issue--I recently dropped something and chipped my (fairly new) white kohler sink. Does anyone know of a kit to repair that?

Leah - I just happened to see an episode of Designed To Sell last night on HGTV and they used a little bottle of enamel paint to fix some nicks in a tub. It was stated that the bottles only cost about $5 and they had 3 colors to test for the right one. I imagine you could pick up something like that at an art supply store. Or google enamel paint and see what pops up. Um, I just looked at the info on last night's episode and don't see a source for the enamel paint. Darn!

I didn't see the episode but I have used enamel paint made especially for bathroom fixtures. It does come in different colors. Loctite is one brand. They also have a "porcelain repair" in a tube that is made to fill scratches and gouges. I can't remember where I got them---either home depot or the hardware store.
I have used the paint on beige tile in my 60's bathroom and on a ding on my stove. The repairs weren't flawless but, in both cases, they were much improved.

My toilet got stopped up - grandkids. My husband an son-in-law got it unstopped but scratched up the bowl with the snake. It looks awfuls. Is there any way to repair it or must I replace it? bunny

my toilet got scratched when we had to cut the old seat off with a hack-saw (threads locked). No structural damage, just a few cosmetic scratches from the saw blade. Can I just clean it up and/or touch it up with some sort of paint or repair kit? Maybe just "Zud" cleaner?

I moved into an old house that has a seagreen tub. Porcelain or cement? Tried to clean it with Zep Tile & Tub cleaner, scratched it pretty bad. Looks like white scum, tried alcohol, Mr. Clean sponges. Can it be fixed? Help!

To Bunny Murphree & Mary,

I too, scratched up my toilet with a Toilet auger/snake while unclogging it.

Have you found a solution to repair the scratches?

Just got finished cleaning scratches from an auger with Lime-away. Tried Ajax powdwer first with no success. Here was my procedure:

1. Turn off water supply.
2. Flush.
3. PLunger to get rid of a little more water (not much - you can skip this step)
4. Dump some lime-away in there.
5. Scrub for about 3 min with Mr. Clean Magic eraser sponge.
6. Turn water on.
7. Flush.
8. Flush again.

Note Lime-away is tough stuff. Follow all precautions on label.

A regular sponge should work fine!

Our home is nearly 20 years old. We still have the original fiberglass bathtub upstairs and, due to other projects and two kids in college, have decided not to remodel the bath at this time. However, the fiberglass tub is highly resistant to being cleaned. I've tried absolutely everything. Sometimes it looks okay, but I'm exhausted after my efforts. Does anyone know how I can get my tub back to "at least it looks clean" condition?

I scratched up my toilet bad using an auger. I used a Mr. Clean sponge and Barkeepers Friend Cleaner and Polish. The sponge didn't do much alone. When I added the Barkeep's the scratches alomst instantly went away. Wow! I had to write back and share it. I doubt the sponge had much to do with it. You can try without it, reply and help the next stupid person who scratches their porcelain like I did.

I have an old porcelain -(I think) tub. I used Soft Scrub gel and brown streaks appeared. I then used bleach, which made the problem much worse. Is there any way I can fix this?? Please help!!

Thanks,

I have just had the same problem of scratches from the auger when I was unblocking the toilet. Ajax powder removed some marks but not others. I figured the black marks are caused by metal rubbing off the auger which should dissolve in acid, so I tried white vinegar straight from the bottle. I soaked up the water from the bowl with a sponge and left the vinegar in the bowl for 30 min. No more marks!

Hope this helps some of you.

HELP !!!!
Last spring we purchased a new acrylic shower for a bathroom we are renovating. The shower is large and comes in three sections. This afternoon while my husband and son were moving it from the basement they banged against the wall taking a piece approximately 2" x 2" out of the front of it. We did find one small piece but there is still a large piece missing. This is not just a scratch it is a piece completely out of the shower right down to the fiberglass.
Is there anything that can be done to repair this as it would run around $2,000. to buy a new shower.
Thanks.

I had scratches on my toilet also. I took Bob Charlesworth advice. Like him, Ajax didn't do much. So after draining the water; in went about 3/4 gallon of vinneger. After 5min. there was a big improvement. After 1hr. scratches were gone. Thanks Bob.
P.S. Check the cleaning bucket for rags before you dump.

If you have marked your acrylic tub surface (as my husband did with his titanium ring), go to Kragan or other automotive supply store and buy "Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish". It is designed for cars. Use it with a soft cloth and quite a bit of elbow grease. It will not damage anything and all marks go away.

I had aluminum scratches on my shower tile. I read the above ideas and tried rubbing with white vinegar, which took off some of the marks. I then switched to rubbing with Lime Away, which removed all the other marks or lightened them until they were unnoticable. Thanks for the ideas!

Just wanted to say that I used white vinegar and a Mr. Clean eraser and within 2 minutes had gotten all of the grey marks that a plumber's snake had left in our porcelain toilet. It really works! Thanks for the help!
