Good Questions: How To Re-Style This Chair?

11-15-chair2.jpgHello AT,

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to change the look of this chair?

I bought it at a consignment store years ago. Not sure what to do with it. I have some ideas but I'd like to hear others.

Thanks, Tina

I love that chair!! I would go with a bright white on the wood with a fun graphic pattern for the fabric, very Jonathan Adler.

The website for Sunset magazine has an article about how to funk-up a thrift store chair...might have some good tips.

I'd paint the wood black and find some really interesting fabric (with a bold pattern - but muted colors) to recover it.

OR...I'd give the chair to ME! :)

Agree with all the above posts, but I would also make the bottom cushion a little plumper.

I can see this chair painted in a high gloss black with a bold black and white print for the cushion and back, maybe a zebra print or some kind of large graphic that is black and white...

I vote for bright white paint and either a graphic chartruese or orange flower print. Looks like you can't go wrong though. Cute chair.

Definitely agree with Kasia.

I think it depends on the rest of your interior- and where you plan to use it.

Using a high gloss paint and then a really bold unexpected geometric is a good way to go.

I see black or dark espresso frame with a complimentary textile- but that could be my own tastes talking.

I would that that wasn't really the bottom of that chair. I think there was a box-type cushion sitting on top of that one. Any good upholsterer will be able to do it, but it won't be cheap.

Anyway... I think it depends on what colors you have what you'd do with it. It's pretty great, if you ask me, by the way. The legs are very Louis XVI while the back seems kind of Napoleonic.

If you're going to leave the blue/white wood, then you should stick with some kin dof blue on the upholstery, I think.

I found a pair of chairs with that similar leg, and I painted one shiny white and one shiny black (years ago) and I upholstered then with fabric that had the Empire State building on it; the white one with the normal side, the black one with the negative side, and called the Souvenir Salt & Pepper Shaker chairs.

There was a place called "And Bob's Your Uncle" which sold them for me.

They were pretty great.

My vote: something furry.

Thank you for all your ideas! I'm going to take everything in consideration. Maybe I'll post the chair again after the make over. I have been leaning towards coloring the chair white and using a bold color with graphic pattern on the fabric. We'll see...

Also, there was a seat cushion to it but it got accidentally thrown away.

Thanks again,
Tina

Sky blue leather with a silver frame. And I'd try to get some tufting on the back.

Or, if decent wood, stripped bare for a sort of limed-oak appearance and zebra stripe fabric.

" I think there was a box-type cushion sitting on top of that one. Any good upholsterer will be able to do it, but it won't be cheap."

Or you couls simply buy some foam - retailers will usually cut it to the shape you require - just make a paper template of the size you want - select the correct depth of foam and they will cut you a custom seat pad - probably cost no more than $10 - then just cover it to match the rest of the seat

As for designs I can think of hundreds for this lovely little chair:

Gloss black wood with zebra print fabric - funky
Gloss chocolate wood with taupe silk fabric - very sophisticated
Fushia pink wood with orange silk fabric - reminds me of a bathroom I saw once
Red wood with jeans cut up and used for the fabric - very 80s

Oh, so many possibilities...

Patrick (the other one) hmmm. You may have something. I am, of course, in love with my own opinions. But I am tending to find your opinions intriguing as well. Hmm. Silver. Glossy silver? Does glossy silver paint exist? I tried to silver leaf once and would not recommend it. Wonder if silver and orange can be used together...I'm sure Jonathan Adler would say yes.

Or what about this? Silver with a pale coral? What do you think?

Fun leather on the seat, like a lime green or turquoise.....the back of the chair could be covered in a print to give it some interest....I am trying to include a picture...hope it works...
good luck
