Good Questions: How To Top My Radiators?

2005_1_3_question mark.jpg(Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first.)

Hello AT,

What would I use to put on top of a radiator to use as a type of table or decorative piece?

Thanks! Natasha

Dear Natasha, our top pick is marble, which is both heavy (and therefore stable), resistant to the heat and a great natural texture.

We found old pieces of marble in our yard on Bedford street that had been used for plantings. You can find precut door saddles which may fit your radiator OR get a custom piece made at most marble and tile shops. We called Nemo at 48 East 21st Street (212.505.0009) and they will do both. MGR

Along the same lines... does anyone know a good, not-to-expensive, cabinetmaker who can create custom covers for forced-air HVAC units? You know those commercial-looking ones that both heat and cool. I've got a couple of quotes but $3K for basically some painted plywood seems steep.

Ok, so marble is your top pick, but are there other acceptable materials? I have a piece of wood I'd like to use, but I worry a lot about it catching fire. DK

Personally, I used some laminate particle-board shelves in an old apartment and they never caught fire...not saying they couldn't, but they didn't!

Wood works fine. People use wood to make covers you know with lattice. How about finding an old table in a thrift store, not too wide. If the radiator is not real tall you could put the table over it. Put things like a collection of family pictures on it. If the radiator is a descent fit you can even cut off back legs if heater is close to wall.
