Hello AT,
So I moved to Park Slope in December. ...
so i somehow thought that i need a sofa. somehow...
i have room for it...
i even taped the location on my floor because:
i like this guy here: The Petrie.
and chair and ottoman...
i checked them out at the store... they are cool.
very solid... sofa works as daybed... very well...
i was not so crazy about a white color of the piece, but C&B
also offers charcoal as an option so i got that...
ordered on sunday.
exciting...
crate and barrel calls me today to confirm the order.
the sofa will take about 20 weeks to deliver.
nice.
I was born in poland, you know... my uncle waited for his phone
connection for several years, and so i was ready to get my sofa
and chair and ottoman in late august.
yey...
custom made for me...
in a mere 20 weeks... (half a pregnancy?)
then the lady asked me if the piece would fit through my door...
because
the feet are not detachable...
this makes the sofa 34 inches thick...
i did not think it would be a problem really...
well, my doors are 28 inches wide... all of them.
i can not get the sofa...
well, i think i could get it... if only i could detach the feet...
or if i could have a human conversation with the manufacturer... because
the person there is certainly a human being and they would understand...
right?...
but crate and barrel will never let me speak to anybody but
crate and barrel... and all the conversations are recorded for quality
assurance...
so...
do you know where i can get that kind of sofa... but maybe smaller?
do you know who makes this sofa?
do you know if there is a way to detach the feet after all... and maybe
not believe that C&B info read off a sheet in some call center?...
do you know?...
hope you found the above amusing... and not annoying..
; )
only the best -witold
Dear Witold, very amusing and long winded. We can barely fit you through the door, and only if we take off your legs! In the meantime, you should know that the Petrie is a modelled on a classic mid-century design and isn't too hard to find. Here are three quick options:
Room and Board has a number of similar sofas - and in smaller sizes
Dune makes a version - called the Climate - which is sweet and can be adjusted dimensionally (pretty sure)
White on White has cheaper knock-odds
The Unique Furniture Service - if you really love it, these guys can dissassemble any sofa and get it into your apartment for $100-$200
If any consolation, I have found Crate & Barrel furniture to actually over-estimate on delivery, then frequently they deliver in less time than promised. And, if you tried to order this from C&B over the phone, I'd try again, in person at a store.
Two words-- knockdown service. Maybe that should be three words. Anyway, if the poster is ADAMANT that that is the sofa, then your last suggestion (disassembly) is the answer! It's part of being a New Yorker, as this New Englander has learned the hard way...
I also pass along the advice that *you should not be present* during the knockdown, because it is brutal.
Also, how wide is the sofa? It only needs to be less than 28 inches at its narrowest. If the movers/delivery people can tilt it, they might be able to get it in without knocking it down.
(seeing it at the store may also allow you to discreetly discern whether or not the legs do in fact come off...)
(whoops, sorry just now seeing you said "I checked it out at the store.")
I'm not sure I understand why this seems to be so much more of a problem in NYC than elsewhere in the country. Are our doorways that much narrower than in the midwest? Within reason and a little bit of angling and manuvering many items can be moved through a doorway that might not seem to fit if attempting to go straight through. Do you have a particularly narrow walk up staircase?
Room and Board has a "fit call" service through whom I sadly learned the 86" Jasper will not fit up my stairs and into my apartment. However the 71" will. Does crate and barrel have such a service?
Also, doesn't it seem unfair that the 86" sofa costs only $50 more than the 71"?
i seem to recall from when i *almost* bought a c&b sofa that they can do a "rehearsal" delivery. That is they bring the sofa, not the pecise one that you bought - but the same model, to make sure it fits. there is a charge for the service though. I ended up getting my sofa from Nova Zembla in Brooklyn. They have a huge variety of designs and fabrics, and each piece is built-to-order, so it can be customized. (I.e. having fixed legs detachable!)
i live on the top floor of a 4th floor walkup in DC, and came close to buying this same sofa. but not in white, no thanks, and not in charcoal in 4 months, no thanks. unless you can wait a quarter of a year, sofa shopping is a nightmare, since stock colors are almost always boring beige, and some stores don't even HAVE stock colors. the national furniture places don't seem to have knockdown service (at least in DC), but pretty much all the local urban stores know what time it is, and will make it happen for an extra 100 smackers.
I used to have a 28" front door however when I redid my kitchen I took the time and opted to get a 42" installed in it's place. The door to the front foyer was 36" however could be easily taken off it's hindges
This was a life saver when it came to moving in all the new appliances and again for when I had the laundery room/pantry redone.
I recently bought the "Brooke" sofa from C&B and ran through the same issues. My door is 29 inches wide but they were able to tilt the sofa and bring it in. The legs of this sofa are not detachable either and the C&B guy who sold the sofa to me measured it from the foot to the top of the arm and that was only 24 inches which was enough to bring the sofa through the door and tilt it in to bring the rest. I think the Petrie sofa looks like it may have the same dimension - you should talk to the agent and make him/her measure the piece to make sure.
we've used Garry's Furniture service in brooklyn to break down a sofa (twice for two moves) and have been satisfied with their work both times. 718-813-0086. it only cost $250 + extra $35 to move the sofa between apartment locations, though the $250 might be a special rate since we purchased the sofa at macy's.
Again a question about C&B Petrie Sofa, does anyone know who the manufacturer is?
Sorry that I'm just happening upon this a month later, but are you SURE it won't fit through? Is there no way of maneuvering or angling it so that the legs "wrap" around the doorway? This is, in fact, a common problem that I've faced as well. But if you can angle the sofa a little just to get them through, you may not have a problem. Just a thought.
I have the Petrie sofa in the stock color. It is very comfortable and I like the trim lines and open bottom. It's not white as in the C & B description, however ("It's brave enough to make a comeback in white") - it's an off-white, natural color. I wasn't sure if it would go with my other white pieces at first, but I think it works now. The fabric is a soft, textured cotton. I think it will stay looking clean without much trouble. So far, so good.
Hello again, I was just vaccuming the cushions and noticed the manufacturer's name in answer to D, it's Shenandoah Furniture of Martinsville VA.
Fitting a sofa into my apartment:
I am horrible with spatial things, so please help me understand if my sofa will fit in my new apt.
My doors are 28", there's decent foyer space and no sharp turns in my apartment.
My sofa is 23" at its narrowest, from the bottom to the top of the arm rest. The back of the sofa is obviously higher--35" with the legs.
So, do I need to worry? Thanks to all!
hmmmmmmm....hitting too close to home, as I just got off the phone today with IKEA after arranging a credit for hauling back the Kramfors sofa that didn't fit into the service elevator, let alone the door, which it would not have fit through either. That's what WE get as suburbanites who are new apartment renters in the city! So, we took 15 measurements with us and searched anew....bought the nice Kinsey sofa from Crate & Barrel. Bought the IKEA one Saturday, delivered on Monday....this one will be delivered end November. It'll fit, I'm SURE.
I want to buy a sofa called the Kinsey from C&B. They only sell it online and only in one color. Does anyone know who makes it, then maybe I can get it in the color of my choice?
Just an update for all you wondering about the sofa. I just got a petrie sofa and it fits fine through a 29" door. The legs are removable. The delivery guys had to screw one off to get it in the door. Oh, and the C&B website is wrong. The couch is actually 32" tall, not 34"! And it's fantastic!
Please HELP, I want this Petrie sofa but i dont want it in 86 inches! I looked on a million sites and cant find anything like it! ANyone have any other suggestions. Has anyone ordered from White on White, is the sofa as uncomfortable as i have heard??
Thanks
I just recieved the Petrie completely trashed, and had to refuse it, after waiting MONTHS! Plus, the color I ordered it in, Mineral Red, looked awful. I couldn't tell if that was because of the fabric or the dirt. Did anyone else order it in red?
Crate & Barrel does not do a "rehersal" delivery. It might be called "delivery" and you pay for it, but its not a rehersal. It's 2 guys delivering the sofa you paid for. That's why it says you are responsible for making sure it fits.
It's a good idea to visit a frame in the store though, because the measurements given on the product information bulletin, on each frame, are provided by the manufacturer... not made up by anyone at Crate & Barrel. And when it says -the legs are not removable- it usually means that they are glued or welded, meaning that they are not 'easily' removable via a screwdriver at the time of delivery. Delivery drivers don't usually plan extra time to remove glued legs from a sofa. But they'll do it, because Crate & Barrel has outstanding customer service.
Shenandoah has a lengthy ETA because they are a small, family owned furniture manufacturer. Perfectionists, to say the least. Their craftsmanship is meticulous and because they have very few exclusive frames, it allows them to focus on making each piece well. Then there is the obvious travel time from Virginia to any given cross-dock, to your home. Why not wait if you know you want it? Kinda like waiting on a house to be built or a vehicle with that special package. There are "stock" options that allow you to have that sofa in your home in 1 week. Same great craftmanship. With or without legs is up to you.
I have had the Petrie sofa for 2 years. I am sorry I bought it. The retro lines of the design are appealing, that's what attracted me to it, since my place has a lot of 50's/60's pieces. I ordered it off the C & B website and had it delivered. I wanted it in loden, but the delay for delivery was really long, and I needed a sofa, so I settled for the stock color. The stock color is not white but off white, with a beige cast. I was disappointed when it came, because I thought it would be more white (as pictured on the website). The fabric is the biggest disappointment. The sofa gets dirty very easily, and if there was some type of finish on the fabric to keep it fresh, I never noticed it. And to make it worse, the fabric (think flannel) has an odd open weave that traps lint - and it's almost impossible to remove even with tweezers. The buttons on the seat cushions are coming off (and the buttons on the seat cushions were never comfortable to sit on) and the stitching on the tufts is coming undone. (No pets or kids used it, and it wasn't abused). The frame is holding up well, but the fabric on the frame is not. I'd pay someone right now to take it away, it brings the look of my place down. Just thought I'd share my experience.
