I recently purchased a Knoll Platner looking coffee table on Craigslist for $40. Are there any identifiers on the authentic table to let me know if it’s an original Knoll? The table appears to be old, but it’s in good condition — Nickel finish and it's solid. Thanks!

Just go to knoll's website for the specification, if you paid 40.00 I seriously doubt its the real thing or someone needed crack and did not care what they go for it-

I believe the Knoll tables have a serial number on the bottom of the frame...
...but that wouldn't stop me from buying it - 40 bucks is 40 bucks.

Oh, and the other thing to look out for in a true Platner table is that the vertical splines are cut at an angle - ie: the cuts are horizontal/parallel with the tabletop, not a straight cut to the wire.

I'm not aware of any company (Italian or Chinese) out there that's making "fake" (and by fake, I mean unlicensed) reproductions of the Platner table to the original or close to the original specs.
There are plenty of tables that I've seen on ebay that purport to look like Platner tables and are labled as such (e.g., "Platner era" or "Platner-like"), but this is one of those items that you'll know is the real deal when you see it.
If it looks exactly like the Knoll Platner table, then it probably is the Knoll Platner table.

Another good way to tell is if it has any soder marks. The Authentic Knoll piece will have no soder marks or globs of sodder at the soder point. Totally not unheard of to find one of these for cheap. Large office buildings buy them by the 100s and toss themwhen they remodel. A new one will run you about $1200

Why are there no photos of this $40 table? This post is a waste of time without them.

LoriSF: They may not have known what they were selling. After all, if you're not a modern design aficionado, you might just think it's a regular table.

If it looks great and you only paid $40 for it....who cares if it's real or not? I wish I could find a great deal like that. It's an awesome looking table.
