Good Questions: Ikea Broder - Good or Bad?

4-28--border.jpgHello AT,

Anyone tried the Ikea Broder shelving system?

I'm looking for a cheaper version of ISS shelving and found this...

I want something that will do minimal damage to my rented plaster walls..

Thanks, Sara

Dear Sarah,

Take a look at the Broder at Ikea if you must and see what the quality is like. We think that for very little damage you are better off doing Elfa Shelving from the Container Store. All it needs is a few screws into your wall up high and everything else hangs off of that. It is also much more attractive and affordable.

There is also a cool version like Elfa at Ikea that we saw last night at a friend's house called Dirigent and there is also Stolmen. See this post for details.

Anyone else???

We used "FreedomRail" double track standards + brackets from:
http://www.schultestorage.com/
(We have 8 roomy shelves (51" long each) and it cost us $200 including all the fasteners and wood)

we actually bought the tracks, brackets, screws, wood from "LumberBoys" on 37th + 2nd Ave.

They deliver for free, and give very good advice on what type of fasteners you need for your particular wall type.

I have the Stolmen system at home and it looks similar to the Broder system, but is more refined. The ikea website only shows the completed system in white, but the dark wood version is much better looking...I would recommend visiting Ikea and taking a look.

I'm with Filip--
I really like the Stolmen system. It looks much more "grown-up" than any of the Elfa or other Ikea solutions.

The Ikea product looks a little like these leaning shelfs from JCPenney, but more cheaply made. They aren't quite the same, but there is enough similarity that you might want to look into these, and the price is in the same ballpark.
