Good Questions: Information About This Unique Piece?

Hi Apartment Therapy, I found this piece at a flea market in Nashville and have been unable to find anything except the patent on the leg design....any ideas? Thanks, ModFruGal

Late 50's to the early 60's. The lines of it look like it was influenced by italian design. But by the construction of it looks to be American. The top looks like it is faux mother of pearl laminate? Cute little find but I don't think it is very valuable. Probably $20-40.

It may be an Oscar Onken - from the arts & crafts movement - I do not know if he had a manufacturing plant in maspeth, new york - he was based out of Ohio. if the screws are original and not replacements (phillips head) the piece is probably of more recent manufacture than his earlier goods - it may take some research but if it is his - it's worth more than the above estimate.

and it's a nice table - hope you bought it because you love it.

It looks like it would have been one piece of a set of three stacking tables.

Judging by the looks of the materials, it's first off got phillips screws, which I have a feeling are original to the piece and secondly, the top seems to be made of a manufactured material, like a mason board type of composite, much like IKEA stuff is made from, if so, it's not that old, probably made within the last 40 years or so is a guess.

I'd see if I can get the patent # off one of the legs and google that or google the patent office and see what you may find.

Good luck and it's an interesting piece non the less.

Thanks guys...I did indeed buy it because I love it...not for anticipated value...I only paid $15, but love it more than that so bargain for me no matter! You are correct that the top is a faux mother of pearl and the underside is a particleboard. The patent office only could verify that the leg was patented in 1958. Jonken (eerily similar to your Onken?) is stamped on the leg with the patent # etc....thanks again for the input!
