Hello AT,
I am considering an apartment (rental) that is the right size, space, price & location, but has a horribly wrong kitchen. I asked the broker to ask the owner about replacing, as I would only take it w/ new appliances.
The other kitchen issue is the kitchen sink and attached cabinet. It's a porcelain double sink w/ dripping faucet, set above old metal cabinets. Since it's a double sink there is no counter space in the tiny galley kitchen.
Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced replacement solution for kitchen sink/cabinet combo? does not need to be anything fancy- this would be an investment made by a renter, and I only plan on living there for 2 yrs, but the current set-up is gross. I would be happy to lose double sink to have some counter space as well.
Thanks! Carolyn

This may not be the nicest solution, but by far the simplest. You could get one of those chopping board things that sit nicely over one of the sinks. Or you could get one made that fits into the recess.
How about Ikea? They have several free-standing cabinet lines that might work for you. And unlike some of their furniture, Ikea's kitchen lines usually get high marks for durability.
You may also want to check out the Ikea Fans Web site at www.ikeafans.com. Lots of ideas there for tricking out a kitchen inexpensively.
Another thought is getting a long, narrow work table for the kitchen and placing it along one wall. I had a pretty narrow galley kitchen with no countertop space a few years back and this is what I did. It worked great. I also mounted a few racks on the same wall as the table so I had a pretty decent prep area. Again, all the materials were from Ikea.
Oops, I totally overlooed Maxwell's answer about Ikea.
Incidentally, a restaurant supply company may be another good source for work tables.
Hi -
I'd also recommend the Varde base cabinet from Ikea. My sister just got one for her apartment and it looks great and has added a lot of work space.
I would also make a plug for a cutting board or cover for one side of the sink. I have a small kitchen with a double sink that's extra deep on one side with a metal cover. When I'm cooking, I love being able to stow dirty dishes under there while still being able to put the top on and use it for prep space.
