Good Questions: Light Fixture for the Dining Room?

5-22-dining-room-light.jpg

Hi Apartment Therapy, Attached is a pic of my dining area and portion of living space next door so you can see some of the colors/materials that share the joint space. I don't know why I'm having such a hard time finding a light fixture for over the dining table, but I am. The electrical box is also off center in the room and will be moved. I've debated using the Moooi random, but small seems too small and medium too big...

(Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first. Email questions and pics with QUESTIONS in subject line to: newyork(at)apartmenttherapy(dot)com)

The ceilings are standard 8' in the dining area and I'm also concerned about the medium hanging too low. Nothing I see feels perfect in size and feel (and price... I think $1k is my limit). The table is a little narrower than most at 34.5" (and 90" long)... another challenge when it comes to the "rule" that a light should be 12" narrower than the table. I'm not a rule follower, but I also don't want the light to totally overwhelm the table and room. Any advice on fixtures would be appreciated! Thanks, Lo

Who has suggestions for Lo?

I vote for a Nelson pendant! Great looking place. Do me a favor, pull the chairs out 6-8 inches from the table, show em off and let em breath.

I don't have any suggestions - but if the electrical box is off-center, there's probably a reason such as a ceiling joist in the way.

Isn't it easier to simply move the table?

-Get a big gaudy brass chandelier on craigslist ($25)
-and spray-paint it apple green ($3.49)
-then put the extra $971.51 toward a vacation.

Just kidding, but not really, that's what I would do.

try cloud from rotelina. I love that pendant and you can adjust the height to your preference. It also seem like it would look good in your space.

a white Poul Henningsen ph5 pendant would look amazing against the dark walls

I think the Cellula would be perfect, albeit for your budget (sorry):

My immediate thought was something rectangular in overall shape to play into the shape of the table. I found a couple that may be suitable.

This site had a nice selection within your budget.

Sorry, no advice--I'm too distracted by your fabulous living room fireplace/window seat combo. I would love to know more about your home!

I'm glad so many good suggestions have been made. I just wanted to post to say how lovely your space is.

As narchitect said, buy something cheap and fun that you can customize with color. Everything in the dining room and living room is beautiful, but very cleanlined and modern. You need something unexpected to create some chemistry.

This is a lovely place... good work!

I would go dramatic... get something red for your pendant

This could be fun, in the "blossom" color (second option):

Thanks all for the great advice!! So many great ideas and links. I really do like the idea of spray painting a gaudy brass chandelier an unexpected color. That's something I've seen them do so many times on home shows, but never really thought of doing myself. I do love the Nelson saucer lamps and ph5, but I like the idea of adding some fun and interest with the light. The room and board pendant could be interesting too.
Thanks again!

Ans Sally... the home was built in '69. That wall is just all fireplace, hearth and windows on either side from floor to ceiling. I just had the bench cushion made with some Paul Smith modulating stripe fabric I bought on ebay. The fireplace is my favorite thing about my place. I don't think anything has changed about it since it was built in '69 and I'm ok with that ; )

Let me clarify... nothing has changed with the fireplace, but a lot has changed with the rest of the place. Like the removal of popcorn ceilings, some velvet flocked 70s wallpaper and an intercom system in every room (some units were only 10 ft away from each other -- much easier to just yell).

Perhaps too predictable, but... I'd like to see a Nelson or Le Klint pendant.

Lo,

Thanks for the information. I just love what I can see of your house and hope you post the rest of it sometime.

I grew up in a house with one of those dumb intercom systems too--we had tile floors and thin drywall so it wasn't like you couldn't hear people talking, let alone yelling. My mom did manage to put it to good use when I was a teenager, though--she could blast static-y, annoying music when I would refuse to get up for school!

ooooh, your table set-up is similar to mine.
I have this http://www.ylighting.com/krt-fly.html?productid=krt-fly&channelid=FROOG&opts=03-Add-Non_Returnable in white but it would look great in any other colour for you.

twotwentysix - that is actually the light I was originally thinking of doing in a light blue or orange! But then I read through searches about how easily it scratches and I decided against it. My place gets so dusty and I was afraid the dust me dusting it would = scratches. Now you have me thinking twice about it.

Lo, love the place - where is that rug from? I've been looking for something like that; have been straying into zebra patterns but I also like what you have there. is the base color black or brown?

buhbis - it's actually charcoal gray and cream and not really a zebra pattern. It's by Angela Adams and the style is Mammy. It's no longer available on her site. I got it years ago and I think it not a style/color she makes anymore in wool. I found one (on sale) on this site below, but I'm not familiar with them.

What a nice space! There are so many options, but the first thing I think of is Tom Dixon's Copper Shade pendant. It's incredibly beautiful in person, and I think it would really look stunning against the dark walls and with the wood chairs.

I would like to suggest a Glo Ball pendant or ceiling mounted fixture from Flos. There are various sizes available, and if you are concerned about the pendant hanging too low, go for the ceiling mounted version.

My favorite feature of this fixture is the even glow created by the diffuser - you can use a fairly bright bulb and still have an even, diffuse glow withut a "hot spot." On top of it functioning well, I find it quite beautiful as well.

I have chosen this fixture for two projects I have worked on, and both clients were extremely happy with it.

A dimmer is a nice accessory to consider for the fixture, if you haven't already.

If I might offer my two cents... I make an ellipse version of my Light Opera chandelier that is longer and narrower than the circular version, made of topiary wire, delicate, and does not intrude on sight lines etc.
I think your space would benefit from something warm and whimsical with the other cool surfaces.
