Hello AT,
I've been on a sofa hunt and finally found one that is perfect. I LOVE IT! Luckly it only comes in two colors but I still can't decide which color. What are my design possiblities with both? wall color? rug? chairs?
This is the only thing that will be staying in our house over time so I'm not trying to match anything we already have to it!
I'm driving myself and my other half crazy trying to decide which color. Right now I have the darker fabric ordered but have another day to switch.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! A

Does the wood stay the same finish even with the darker fabric? Because I like the contrast between the light fabric/dark wood and am thinking it would not be as dramatic with the dark fabric, maybe. BUT, that said, I do like the dark fabric for long-term maintenance issues (I just replaced a 5-year-old sofa in a color VERY similar to your "oatmeal" above" due to irreconcilable dinginess). Sorry, I am not helping much, am I? OK, go with the dark.

my mother says you're crazy for even debating - obviously the darker fabric is the more responsible choice. But that's my mother. what does she know?

i would go with the darker fabric as well since i could not keep a light colored sofa clean. you could accessorize the sofa with light colored pillows that are easy to maintain. plus chances are your wall color is lighter than the sofa which would help it avoid blending into the walls.

I would go with the darker fabric too...

I have a light-colored sofa. It's even lighter than the oatmeal color pictured in your link. No problems here keeping it clean... The lighter color looks sexier to me; and it shows off the lines of the couch better, imo. The tweed looks a little more... um, "stuffy" to me.

1 vote for dark. More durable, and just nicer looking I think.

Definitely dark. The light does look nicer to me, but in my house it would get stained/dingy for sure.

If you are an all adult household without pets and don't have a lifestyle or parties where food or wine might come in contact with the sofa, go for the oatmeal. If there are pets, children or friends who might not treat the sofa with the same respect you will, go for the darker fabric.

I vote light, but maybe just cuz it feels like Spring here in New York.
But...
What are your wall colors? Do you want your sofa to contrast or blend?
What kind of room do you want to end up with?

Dark! With the light one you would have to, as Careen says, avoid a "lifestyle where food or wine might come in contact with the sofa," and what fun is that? You should be able to drink wine on your sofa!
Also, the dark one is a great color and an interesting nubby texture. Plus, it's still quite neutral, so you could go any number of directions with the rest of your furnishings, paint, etc.

I vote for dark, also. If it were me, I'd put lighter things (wall color, side tables, rugs) around a dark couch, and darker things (a brown wall, dark wooden tables) around a lighter couch, so maybe it depends also upon what you'd rather have in the rest of the rom?

I drink red wine and eat all types of messy food on my off-white-colored couch. I take naps (and occasionally drool) on it. I have guests over frequently who like to drink and sometimes get sloppy-drunk; and have at least 3 big parties per year. [A certain ATLA editor even managed to get dark chocolate shavings melted on it.] The couch (and matching loveseat) have always managed to clean up well. With standard cleaning methods and readily available cleaning products, nearly every stain has come up... If you're leaning towards the lighter color, don't let those types of issues get in the way. It's just a couch, not an untouchable, priceless work of art... It should come down to your personal taste and design scheme.

I say either.
What I really want to know is WHERE DID YOU FIND THIS GORGEOUS SOFA?!?!?!?!
i want one.

Light, most definitely. Show off those sexy legs.

I'm with Enrique. I love my ivory sofa and have never had a problem with stains etc. The gosford color is just too heavy for my taste. I'm sure which ever one you decide on you will make it look amazing though!

Wish I could see the front since most people never get the chance to look at the backs of their sofas.
I'd go with the Gosford.

I love the oatmeal, but unlike Enrique, I'd never be able to keep it clean. My husband, before he was my husband, spilled a bowl of chili on his couch, and we have a cat. I would go with Gosford, but you may be neater than my household.

The "dark" that you are talking about is more of a middle tone that I think it's perfect. The legs being so much darker is a great contrast which might be too much in the lighter fabric. The mid-tone also has more interest as it isn't just one solid color. There are so many shades that can be pulled from that weave for design elements.

After reading the other comments, either I or others in this thread are confused but I think the "dark" one IS the one pictured, right? At least it is on their web site. I think it just looks lighter here on AT. With that said, I still think the darker one is the way to go.

I like the light one much more. As another commenter mentioned, the darker sofa looks stuffy (like an old folks home, maybe?). Also, as someone else mentioned, I like the contrast between the light fabric and the wood frame.

Light. It's not even really that light, it's just the lighter of the two. It looks fresher, the other looks dark and heavy. I would prefer the wood to really contrast with the fabric, so go light.
Alicia is right, what is your style preference for the room? If your tendency is rich rooms with layers of pillows, throws, books and lots of stuff, go for the dark. If you like a minimalist look, uncluttered, the light would probably be the way to go. Both are nice neutrals so color hue isn't as important as color value. Either way, great sofa!

i would go for the light, it looks so fresh and crisp.

I bought the light/cream Petrie sofa from C&B, and it was a huge mistake. Daily wear and dirt have ruined in 3 short months :(

I would go with the darker! it's beautiful!

I vote for the Urban Tweed!

Holly, they are both Urban Tweed! which one?
view olya's profile
It's not just the darkness of the dark one that I like; it's the fact that I specifically see green, brown and a bluish-grey in it, and that seems interesting to me, and it seems like it would look great with three of the most popular families of neutrals.
And that lighter one that calls itself oatmeal looks a little more like cement, and I see absolutely no color variation in that photo of that sample. Not that THAT is a bad thing, but it's just not my favorite.

Ugh sorry Olya. Gosford. :)
