Good Questions: Looking for a Modern Wall Bed?

10-11-murphy.jpgHello AT,

Ten years ago, I saw a swank, modern wall bed (murphy bed) at a furniture store in Soho.

Now I want to find that bed, or some wall bed for a guest room / edit suite. But all the choices are grandma and very expensive. I'm willing to pay the price for the wall bed that's worth it.

I've checked Dwell, Design Within Reach, etc.

Any suggestions? Elinor

Dear Elinor, This is a great question and we're only going to be able to start to answer this question for you. As you know, there are two parts to the Murphy/Wall bed: the bed mechanism and the cabinetry. What you are looking for is a swank, modern cabinet as any mechanism can be fitted inside. Many swank wall beds are custom made, but we did find a few links for modern sources:

Gracious Home has a really nice, sleek, modern murphy bed on display in its UWS store in the bedding section.

After researching Murphy Beds a few years back for our guest room, we ended up going with a Haefele (located at Madison and 27th St.) mechanism. You can see after the jump below it has a simple panel attached to the underside of the mattress support, so there are no doors to you need to open first. We had bookcases built around the bed cabinet and hang a large painting on the panel when it's not in use, so you wouldn't even know there's a bed behind it.

We love the legs which extend and retract automatically -- most other beds force you to hold the bed with one hand while you're lowering it to manually extend the legs -- but the kicker was the foam mattress (there is a weight limit on mattresses for most murphy beds, necessitating foam over tradional springs) was quite comfy ;-)

Oops, let's try that jump again!

Don't know if anyone in the US carries this, but some of these UK wall beds look awesome: http://www.bonbon.co.uk/clei/index.htm

All three of the Murphy beds that I've been involved in the selection of have been at the Murphy Bed Center and the mattresses for them are normal mattress. No, you cannot have box springs, but it's a normal matress.

And I decided to buy mine from there, because I didn't feel like dealing with a separate delivery and another company, but you can get your mattress from anywhere, as long as it's not one of those big old pillow-top kind.

Yes the Clei line looks fantastic but it's nearly impossible to find in the U.S. (believe me, I've spent many hours on the web trying to track down a source). Design & Comfort has their nifty swiveling bookcase/bed but last time I asked the price it was over $5000 - ad that was a few years ago! I'd love to get it but the cost is just insane.

Went to check out the Clie Line at Design and Comfort because I liked it in the pictures. It is not of a very high quality and I would not recommend it for daily use. It could be great if you are only using it once in a while for guests.

The search continues for me.

Hi Elinor,

My spouse & I love the Clei beds sold by Design & Comfort, but you are going to be paying $4000 -$6,000 for the murphy bed. We couldn't afford it, but went instead with a company called The Bedder Way Co. Most of their stuff isn't modern looking, but they do sell a custom unit with a mirror on the front. You can select your own paint color & the white ends up looking pretty sharp / modern. You'll pay around $2200- $2500 & the best part is that the company will deliver it to NYC & install it in your place. Inova also makes a nice looking murphy / table bed.

I've just completed a three month search for a wall bed (while sleeping on a blow-up mattress). I found two final options. The table bed is cool but just didn't work for my narrow space - www.inovallc.com.

So I finally decided on TechLine's bed that you may see: www.techlinestudio.com/wallsbed

Their quality is so nice and they have complete layouts you may see in their showroom at 35 East 19th Street. They actually come to your apartment and measure for you -- to make sure it's the right size. Good luck.

SWANK Muphy Bed. Ha. The most important feature required for swank is deception. And to become deceptive I would suggest you learn how much weight the MurphyBed Mechanism can lift. That is going to be your limit to designing. A standard Murphy Bed mechaism can do little to hide it's required function. You will see springs or gas pistons limiting function and design options. Until your budget can suffer the hit of moving up to Hotel quality mechanisms,SWANK isn't going to be an option.

Thanks to all for your helpful information on Murphy beds. I intend to follow these various sites up. However I still am interested in a hotel quality Murphy bed. Any resources for that beast?

I was shopping around for a murphy bed, and went to various companies in the city. I own a one bedroom apartment in Manhattan and need all the space I can get! I wanted to create a murphy bed, built according to my taste and budget. I walked into a Manhattan Cabinetry store located at 455 Park Avenue South (between 30th and 31 Street) I am thrilled with the murphy bed I bought at Manhattan Cabinetry. I strongly recommend them for anyone looking to get a murphy bed...and they also do panel beds. Quality like this is hard to beat. Check them out @ WWW.ManhattanCabinetry.com

Any other stores in New York that sell modern wall bed systems with side cabinetry? Thank you.

The discussion link above doesn't work anymore.

I'm seriously considering the Inova through Foremost. Anybody have experience with the Inova Table Bed? It's supposed to be sturdier than the Sofa version.

I am looking to buy a murphy bed but want to know if it will work with a Tempurpedic Mattress. Does anyone have a personal experience to share? Tempurpedic tells me that the mattress will be damaged from being stored in an upright position but I don't know if this is definitely true or if it is just a disclaimer on their part. Please advise. Thank you!!
