Hello AT,
I was wondering if you might be able to lend some guidance. I've been looking for shelves that fit my particular criteria for some time now, actually since I moved to NYC. I thought there might be something I'm missing, and I'm sure new stuff has come out since I was searching in earnest.
I am looking for low shelves, under 28", a drawer in the bottom that would hold dvds spine up, one shelf, and between 60"-80" in length. I would also go for something modular that would fit these dimentions.
It seems simple enough but I haven't found anything like it.
Thanks, Sara

ROOM AND BOARD - their Brussels customizable unit seems to fit your description.

Thanks for the link, however that is entirely drawers. I'm looking for one drawer on the bottom and a shelf above it. This ikea thing is design wise right, but there's no way those colors could fit:

I've had those links open for a week now, hoping that i could get used to the colors. If only it was available in birch.
When you find the right thing, it's like a dream come true, so I'd say the search is half the fun. But if the fun ends before the search does, you might consider having something custom made.
Because in some of the small spaces that I've had a hand in optimizing, there have been times when custom-made pieces were actually cheaper and better than things on the market. And in some cases, they weren't cheaper, but they were so much that the human cost was so much less.
For instance, in a Brooklyn brownstone (it was, and still is, a rental) I had some file storage window seats built. I think, back in 2000, they were around $175 or so, and there were 3 of them, because there were 2 windows with niches. Basic toy-box construction, but I had them build the bottom to be a higher height, so that the depth would correctly accommodate file storage. Then I, myself, added molding the fronts of them to match that which adorned the panels behind them, so they would appear built-in. Then I painted them out white to fit in with the rest of the place, and I created white vinyl cushions for the tops. Anyway, this was MUCH better than the cheap wooden file cabinets that I had bought for myself a few years before, and these were nice, solid wood.
Gothic Cabinet Craft is a pretty good place to have things made, but these particular items were made at Mike's Furniture, which is on the corner of Amsterdam and 84th Street. The people there were very nice. The way I did it was I went in, and looked around, and saw an actual toy-box they had made and which was sitting there for sale, and that gave me the idea for the solution that I came up with.
So, if you really do have such specific measurements for your space AND you have a look at the things they already make, you can come up with your own designs, and it doesn't have to cost a fortune.
As you search all the possibilities for things that are already designed, think of designing it yourself as kind of a trump card that you could play if you really need to.
I just recieved a catalog from Grandin Road that has a TV stand that fits your description, except it's 24 1/4" deep. It's called the Chesterton TV stand, their website is grandinroad.com. It's a bit pricey - $700 - but so you could use the picture to show someone what you want.
Blu Dot has something in the pipe that matches this description for release soon . . .
