Good Questions: Looking For Mr Good Pillow?

8-21-couch.jpgHello AT,

I have a green couch that I found on Craigslist; I got it for free. It's a great couch, excpet for the fact that it's missing one of it's pillows on the side. I was thinking I could buy two tan, rectangular pillows to substitute for the missing pillow and to replace the one that's already there. Any suggestions as to where I can buy such a pillow? I've looked everywhere from DWR to Room and Board to Target. I can't find any, and those that are similar are way out of my budget, which is roughly $25 per pillow.

Thanks! Sameer

Dear Samoi,

Awesome couch! As for the pillows, you may have to kick your budget up a tad, but we would recommend looking here:

PillowsandThrows.com
as well as Goodwill and Housing Works, AND
Z Gallerie
Loft 21

Anyone else??

You could go to Canal Foam & Rubber on Canal street and get 2 foam pieces cut exactly to size . Then make a cushion cover for them. This is if you are handy with a sewing machine. If you aren't, then getting someone to make them for you may cost more than $25. Sorry.

Try TJ Maxx or Filene's Basement. They have lots of super-discounted, very nice home decor pillows.

Also, Maxwell: "Samoi"? He signed his name "Sameer."

why not get a pillow form...it doesn't have to exactly match the size of the pillow you have now...and then get some fabric and make a simple pillow cover?

I bet you could talk someone into sewing it for you even!

overstock.com might have what you're looking for.

Is Economy Foam still on East Houston corner of Allen on the LES? The Housing Works (or any thrift shop) idea is terrific.

Try P&S Fabrics (Broadway btwn. Franklin & Leonard) for remnants or yardage of inexpensive decorator fabrics (they're downstairs.) Or maybe Harry Zarin at Allen and Grand, but save yourself some time by telling them when you walk in that you're looking for either remnants or low-priced goods.

E-bay is a surprisingly good source for decorating remnants, btw.

You don't necessarily need someone with a sewing machine, if that's tricky for you. Just sew the cover with needle and thread, leaving a 3-4 inch. opening on one short side; turn outside out, insert pillow and slip-stitch shut.

i had a couch like this, and the side cushions were actually attached to the sides of the sofa, and they hung over the arm to look like throw pillows. it really looks likes your couch is the same, but i can't tell if the cusion cover is still there on the left side or if someone has cut it off. if it is, all you need is a pillow form (you can buy one of these at any sewing store), or a piece of foam, mentioned above, that you can slip into the pillow cover that's already there.

i don't know if that made any sense...

foam place on houston and 1st/allen is by far the cheapest place for pillow inserts I've ever found. Or if you find pillows that are the right size, just get a fabric you like better and recover them.

P&S Fabrics also has pillow forms

The Vermont Country Store has small wedge pillows that might work for this.

Thanks for all the help, guys! Yeah, I noticed that my budget is a bit low (because the couch itself was free off Craigslist)... I think DIY is pretty much my best option. Surprisingly, though, Pottery Barn had good prices, but they didn't have the colors I was looking for. Thanks again!

Ikea has some rectangular pillow forms/covers. I thought they had some really interesting patterns and textures. Check them out online. They now have their catalog online and you can shop by phone.

I agree with Danielle on the pillow forms. Try NotYourMomsPillows.com
They have lots of cheap pillow forms and I think they manufacturer most of it anyway. They are also made in the good ol USA. Also I found this coupon code "order66" you can use there for 10% off too.
