Good Questions: Love These, But Cheaper?

1-16-squareswestelm.jpgHello AT,

I would love to be able to cover my terrace with these wood deck tiles from west elm, but I can't afford it. Any suggestions for cheaper alternatives?

Thanks, Pam

Dear Pam,

You will be hard pressed to go cheaper than West Elm, but we do believe that Ikea offers something similar - in season. Check their website and definitely make a trip to a store in the Spring to get a jump on it.

Anyone else??

Overstock.com usually carries these every summer.

Ikea has some I think, although they are a light color.

I researched these last year - here's a site with a variety of options: http://www.ezydeck.net

Truck pallets. Look behind Target in downtown Brooklyn.

I have seen these for sale at Costco.com - If my math is correct, these might be cheaper (shipping is included):

I think I have also seen these at IKEA, but I couldn't find them on their site.

Good luck!

Ikea has them very a very reasonable price. I bought some to use on bathroom floor but then we nixed that idea, so we might use them next summer in our garden plot. As said aboe, they are lighter -- a sort of oiled-teak look. chances are "in season" will be coming soon, if clothing et al is any indicator!

Wow, this will look SO much nicer than the green outdoor carpeting I was contemplating putting on my deck. Thanks so much for this info, with the shape of my deck (rectangular but curved out in the front) I will need the kind with plastic backing that can be cut into shape.

Has anyone here installed these? Is it easy/hard, and is cutting the tiles a pain? Plus, how much maintenance do they need?

In the past, I have bought big (& cheap) grassy/beachy rugs at IKEA and thrown them on the balcony. They look very summer-y.

i saw the tiles last year at west elm. even in the showroom, away from foot traffic, they looked worn and nasty... so you can imagine how they would look outdoors.

have you considered gravel? small pebble gravel in a sand or grey color?

Hi Pam, There may be some ideas at this post on the SF site: http://sanfrancisco.apartmenttherapy.com/sf/051906/outdoor-furniture/wood-deck-tiles-008232

Good luck!

Wow, I need something like these. My patio is hideous, paint-stained concrete. Problem is, it's not exactly flat. There's center near the drain is probably 4" lower than the outsides, and the decline is gradual. Anyone have ideas for using these in that kind of situation?

How about making them yourself if you're even the least bit handy with a saw? They're really simply made. Time consuming maybe, but certainly the cheapest alternative and they're not complicated.

This is what I did on my balcony in 2004. In 2005 I called to get more tiles to complete the job and was told they were discontinued. I've been searching for an affordable solution ever since. I think I'm going to fill in the rest with rocks.

Ok, now I've had a chance to look at the links that others provided and the tiles from Costco are the same ones I have. And it's a great price = 20 tiles per box for $100. That's what I'm going to get. But Lisa points you to some other posts that started with my post asking for help last year. There are other links there.

eeeek - the tiles are "no maintenance". I now have a water fountain out on the balcony and even with water splashing on them, not to mention snow and other bad weather they are still fine.

One more thing (wow, 4 posts in a row! new record)

This is the fountain I purchased last year and it's now on sale. I LOVE my fountain so for any of you thinking about getting one for your outdoor space I highly recommend this one. No angels, no lion heads, just a nice fountain.
