Good Questions: Love This Bed! Anything Similar in the US?

3-6-senegal.jpgHello AT,

I found this bed (named the 'Senegal') on the Natural Bed Company's website. The company is unfortunately in the UK. I really love the bed. I've been looking for a bed that is both contemporary and simple but that also has a slightly ethnic look. Have you seen anything similar that can be bought in the US?

I've looked at the Dialogica Malindi bed. I like it but find it a little too ornate for my taste. Thanks, Diana

Wow, they have some lovely beds. Looks like they will ship to the US...

Ah yes, the finding the good bed problem. I too have had this delimma.

Honestly, the closest I think you are going to get in the U.S. is through a quality Shaker furniture maker.

Another option, and one I once looked into is having a bed I saw in a magazine custom made by a local carpenter/furniture maker. I looked for furniture makers/carpenters on Craigslist, (here in Portland, Oregon where we have many furniture maker types of folks). The bids I was getting were in the $650-$900 dollar range which was cheaper than the original magazine version by about a thousand dollars.

I ended up buying a new bed from a well known company, but it is nice to know that custom furniture is available in a good price range.

Diana, I've been looking for a while for a bed just like this - I have come up dry. I agree that Shaker furniture comes closest, but even then I haven't seen anything with the lines/proportion this bed has. Custom may be the way to go, if you don't want to import it.

Hi,

I am currently looking into the cost of shipping this bed from the UK to Massachusetts where we live. However, I am pretty sure that the cost will be prohibitive, for us.
I've e-mailed the company and will post any information they give me.
In the meantime, I would still love to be able to find a similar bed in the US.
I'll also look into Shaker style beds. Thank you for the suggestions.

That really is a beautiful bed! These are the closest that came to mind...

I bet you could assemble the first with just the four posts (not the top cross-brackets):

a typical bed is just a table or a shelf, you can DIY.

This guy will probably make it for you, and he's in Maine so somewhat close to your locale:

This guy is located in Mass and also makes custom beds:

God, Google is a wonderous thing

I do like the DIY idea, in theory. However knowing that I still haven't cleaned out my gutters from last fall and that I "fixed" my split dining room chair with duct tape, making furniture is probably not happening for me anytime soon.
