Good Questions: Low Nightstands for MALM?

2-20-malm-nightstand.jpg

Hey there ATNY: We recently purchased the MALM King bed from IKEA, but are having a heck of a time trying to decide on a nightstand, anything BUT the MALM nightstands — trying not to be too matchy-matchy. Most nightstands are quite high, but the MALM bed is quite low to the ground, so my options seem to be quite limited. Any suggestions? Thanks so much! Trina

There are endless possibilities for cool nightstands — if you don't go for a low-chair, we'd recommend West Elm's Floating Drawers (currently on sale) or something similar.

Any other suggestions?

I like the componobili 2-stack, in white. It has a drawer to hide "personal" items, and softens the massive rectangles of the bed with some curves.

I use these, OFFI Mag table.

A small eames table might also work:

I'm a fan of the Malm headboard/hidden drawer unit deal for a clean line (and huge amounts of storage).

Or, you could buy two small tables at a thrift store and whack a couple of inches off the bottom before refinishing (or not).

Good luck!

how about wall mounting/shelves? I'm a huge fan of that because it leave you the floor space for something else.

I have a MALM bed. It's a twin bed, in that glossy white finish.

For my nightstand I actually use the Ikea JONAS drawer unit, in Birch. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10089191

It's the same Birch that my MALM chest of drawers is made from, and they look quite sharp together. It's tall, for a nighstand, but not very. It's actually a comfortable height, in fact, since my mattress is a rather thick.

Looks like you may want simple lines?

I do not recommend glass top, I tried out my Eileen Gray table as a bedside table as it was designed for but setting down a glass of water in the middle of the night is not kind and round is tough too.

This is very low, might be too low-

I have these and have used then as bedside tables, wow I just freaked at the price I think I paid 100.00 about 17 yrs. ago.. they have served me well went from bedside to sofa side to two together as a coffee table at one point, maybe there is a knock offs for less-

I have this little table as a bedside in my guest room with the Malm bed, I think the quality and design is great for the price.

Stepstools? Lots of possibilities of design and the height (or lack thereof) that you need.

I use small baskets with lids (cylindrical or square). You can use them for storage and put a lamp, books, alarm clock, etc. on top. I buy these baskets from a store near me called Ethnics (in Philadelphia), but here are similar ones...(especially items 1181 and 1185).

Be flexible - mix and match styles. Just because the frame is ultra modern doesn't mean you have to "match" tables to it. We used some mid century modern wood and glass side tables that are modern but curvy... and now we are using the ones that attach to the Malm itself, we love them. Good luck!

I second Aaron's suggestion on the West Elm floating media drawers. I settled on these because I absolutely require drawers in my bedside storage but I didn't want to spend the $400-$700 on a unit you usually have to spend to have drawers. I use two on each side of my bed and, stacked one on another, each set looks like a single unit. The best part is that these drawers are not "flat pack" furniture. They arrive assembled, with no slab seams or screws showing. They are visually and functionally comparable to much more expensive pieces and hands down are cheaper and look better than any of the actual West Elm nightstands.

Mine sit on carpet grippers to float them about 1/4-1/2" off the ground. The total height is about 12 1/2" inches high for 2 units.

How about a tailored ottoman or pouf, outfitted with a really nice tray for stability?

What about IKEA benjamin stools? They're cheap and they look awesome.

I have the Malm headboard and I use the Benjamin stools as side tables. They are a great height and I found two small square trays (also at Ikea) to put on top to increase the size of the table top space.

We just bought the Malm bed and had the same issue! We ended up buying the Ikea Trollsta table in yellow - because I love yellow and it was nice and low. It looks pretty cute! I'm sure black would look just as great.

It's kind of a nice mix of aesthetics ... on a budget.

My partner and I just bought the same bed, same size and we were having the same problem. How about the link side table at cb2, which by the way is on sale right now. I think they are absolutely beautiful!

Unless you have a giant room I do not suggest getting the 3 piece Malm headboard/bed shelf kit (not like it looks like you're going to though... ;) but other viewers may be considering it - it really is not that useful if you can't pull the shelves all the way out)
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80109421
We did buy it with our Malm frame and have about 2 feet a few inches on either side to pull it out which isn't enough, I have been wishing every day that we had purchased the Malm bedside tables instead , it wouldve been enough room for lamps, water, alarm clocks with storage for books, kleenex...anything we really need. I think they look really good too from the pictures I have seen and not "matchy" not that you couldn't choose an alternate color wood from your frame to set it apart visually. I might just do that now and try to find an ikeahacker.com idea for the current piece.

How about these: Umbra Magino Acrylic Stool/Magazine Rack. Not great if you have "personal" bits, but otherwise they are a great height for a lower bed.

I second the very first comment! I have a low bed in a glossy white finish (not a Malm, but it looks quite similar). I bought the 2-stack Componobili in white and I'm in love with it. The roundness contrasts nicely with the straighter lines of the bed, and the storage space is good.

try small, floating shelves. if you need to hide anything then just space 2 just far enough apart to slide a pretty box in.

If you really want to try something else I'd say what ever you pick you want something that is no higher than the level of the mattress.

But we have exactly the same bed and my advice would be to go with the Malm bedside tables. This is a super clean look, not just the form but the finish and texture of the wood veneer. We've played around with a few things and just decided in the end that it just wasn't working. It made the room feel busy. Ask yourself why you were attracted to this kind of design in the first place? Don't fight the zen of this bed. It is the perfect start for a peaceful, uncluttered, quiet and visually restful bedroom. Get the matching side tables and surround yourself with calming natural colour acessories, patterns and visual art.

I had found two of those step end tables (like http://www.designat639.com/Photos/Lane-step-end-table.jpg) that are everywhere at garage sales, painted them to match, and used those. They were the perfect height.

The personal bits go in a basket with a lid, as there are no drawers.

We have a queen Malm in a very small room and I wanted something that had a narrow profile and was light and airy. I ended up using two Rian table from Ikea: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90086914. At $15 each, they fit my budget as well. They don't have storage, obviously, but that motivates me to keep clutter to an absolute minimum.
